Location and main entrance
Zhangbi Ancient Fortress is in Zhangbi Village, Longfeng Town, Jiexiu City, Jinzhong. The main entrance is the South Fort Gate; navigate to “Zhangbi Ancient Fortress.” The visit combines a ground-level historic village with an underground military tunnel system. The tunnel entrance is at Kehan Temple, and the route continues to Kongwang Xingci Shrine and other above-ground buildings.
Allow about 2 hours for the shorter route or 3–4 hours for the fuller route. The site suits visitors interested in historical exploration, military remains, traditional buildings, and glazed ceramics. The tunnels are dark, narrow, and sometimes damp, so visitors sensitive to enclosed spaces, people with limited mobility, and young children should decide in advance whether to enter.
Tickets and hours
The on-site ticket is about CNY 75. Online platforms may offer discounts; students and visitors aged 60–64 pay half price, while visitors aged 65 and above enter free. Real-name reservations are available through the “智游山西” or “张壁古堡” WeChat account. The entry method for Chinese visitors uses a Chinese resident ID; international visitors should check which identification document is accepted when booking.
Peak-season hours are about 08:00–18:00, with shorter hours in the low season. A night opening may be offered during public holidays. Check the ticket, tunnel access, night programme, and closing time for your travel date rather than planning around a holiday event as a daily fixture.

The ground-level constellation village
The village follows the Twenty-Eight Mansions of the Chinese constellation system, with streets called Dragon Street and Phoenix Street; its overall layout is shaped like a dragon. The South Fort Gate, Guandi Temple, Longhefu Screen Wall, and North Fort Gate form the main ground route and show how the settlement is arranged.
Kuixing Tower can be climbed for a view over the fortress. Huai Bao Liu and Erlang Temple are useful additions on the fuller route. The attraction preserves a ground village and an underground defence system together, while glazed buildings add a second theme to the ground-level visit.
The tunnels and glazed ceramics
Kehan Temple is the underground entrance. The open visitor section of the underground tunnels is about 1.5 km long and consists of multiple levels, with command rooms, granaries, and traps along the way. The tunnels are dark and tight, so walk slowly in the direction of the guide route.
Kongwang Xingci Shrine contains two Ming-dynasty peacock-blue glazed steles. The Liuli Shijie Museum displays modern reproductions of the Twenty-Eight Mansions in glazed ceramic. The best photo subjects include the fortress from Kuixing Tower, tunnel depth and light wells, and close details of the glazed steles; do not touch them.

Build your day
Two-hour tunnel-focused route
Enter through the South Fort Gate and visit Guandi Temple first. Continue to Kehan Temple for the underground tunnel, walk the approximately 1.5-km open section, then see the Longhefu Screen Wall and the glazed steles at Kongwang Xingci Shrine before leaving through the North Fort Gate. Allow about 2 hours.
This route places the tunnel in the middle, with above-ground buildings before and after it. Check the open entrance and guiding arrangement before going underground. After emerging, follow the North Fort Gate direction rather than waiting in the dark or walking back against the route.
Three- to four-hour fuller route
Add Kuixing Tower, Huai Bao Liu, and the glazed-ceramics exhibition at Erlang Temple, then take in the Twenty-Eight Mansions layout from above. The fuller route takes about 3–4 hours, so count the ground and underground sections separately rather than dropping the village layout after the tunnel.
If someone in your group does not enter the tunnels, they can wait near the South Fort Gate, Kehan Temple, or another ground-level attraction and then visit Kuixing Tower and the museum. Meet at the South Fort Gate or exit before arranging the next stop in Jiexiu.
Get there
From Jiexiu East Station
A taxi from Jiexiu East Station costs about CNY 40–50 and takes roughly 30–40 minutes. Another option is Bus 223 to Jiexiu Railway Station, followed by Bus 301. From Jiexiu Railway Station or Jiexiu Bus Station, take Bus 301 from the central bus terminal; the fare is about CNY 3 and the journey takes about 1 hour.
Bus 301 runs roughly every 30 minutes. Check the day’s schedule before setting out, leave time for the transfer from the high-speed railway, and prepare a return option beyond ride-hailing.
Driving and the return trip
For a self-drive visit, navigate to “Zhangbi Ancient Fortress Parking Lot 1,” where parking costs about CNY 10–20 per visit. Walk from the car park to the South Fort Gate; the parking area and the main entrance are separate points, and a temporary drop-off point at the gate is not a return stop.
Ride-hailing cars are scarce after the visit. Bus 301 is the preferred public option, or reserve a regular taxi in advance and confirm the fare method before boarding. Holiday night openings, the last bus, and taxi availability can all change, so confirm the route back to Jiexiu before leaving.
Know before you go
Tunnel safety and equipment
The tunnels stay around 10°C, with low light and possibly damp floors. Bring a light jacket even in summer, wear shoes with good grip, and watch for low sections if you are tall. Visitors who are sensitive to enclosed spaces, have limited mobility, or are travelling with children can stay on the ground-level route.
Inside the tunnels, walk slowly along the guided route. Do not run, climb, or leave the open path, and give way in narrow sections. Do not touch the glazed steles or other historic elements; follow the on-site photography rules.
Tickets, night openings, and food
The on-site ticket is about CNY 75, and online tickets may be discounted. Check the day’s ticket, night-opening, and tunnel-access details before visiting. A night opening does not guarantee late buses or ride-hailing cars, so arrange the return first.
Food inside the attraction receives mixed reviews; Zhenxiangpiao Restaurant is one possible choice. After the visit, return to Jiexiu for dingding noodles, black tofu, or knife-cut noodles. Houtu Temple, Xian Shen Tower, and Taiheyan Archway are separate Jiexiu stops with their own opening hours, tickets, and walking time.
