Location and entrance
Wang Family Compound is in Jingsheng Village, Jingsheng Town, Lingshi County, Jinzhong. The usual entrance is the East Gate, on the east side of Jingsheng Confucian Temple (静升文庙) rather than at the end of the shopping street. The main areas are Gaojiaya, Hongmenbao, and Longfeng Bridge; there are no electric carts inside, so the visit involves walking between courtyards and climbing steps.
Allow about 2 hours for the main spaces in Gaojiaya, Longfeng Bridge, and Hongmenbao. Plan 3–4 hours if you want to look closely at more courtyards and carvings. The site suits visitors interested in Ming–Qing architecture, Shanxi merchant history, and brick, wood, and stone carving; visitors with limited mobility or strollers should plan around the steps.
Tickets and hours
The ticket is CNY 55 in the peak season from April to October and CNY 35 in the low season from November to March. Students pay half price, and visitors aged 60 and above enter free. Real-name reservations are available through the “智游灵石” WeChat account. The entry method for Chinese visitors uses a Chinese resident ID; international visitors should check which identification document is accepted when booking.
Peak-season hours are 08:00–18:30, with ticket sales ending at 18:00. Low-season hours are 08:00–17:30, with ticket sales ending at 17:00. Check the ticket, reservation, and last-ticket arrangements for your travel date.

Gaojiaya and the three types of carving
Start in Gaojiaya with Dunhou Residence and Ningrui Residence. Brick, wood, and stone carvings appear on lintels, window frames, and column bases; the edges of doors and windows and the entrances to the courtyards are worth a close look too.
The rear courtyard of Ningrui Residence is good for window-lattice light and shadow. Look beyond the decoration at the relationship between the main rooms, side rooms, and passageways to understand the compound’s layered layout.
Hongmenbao and who it suits
Hongmenbao is arranged around lanes shaped like the Chinese character “王.” Climb the walls for a view of the overall courtyard and street plan. Visitors interested in spatial design, architectural photography, or merchant-family history can see Gaojiaya first and compare the scale from Hongmenbao.
The courtyards have many steps and the whole visit is on foot. The top of the Hongmenbao wall is the place for a wide view; the rear courtyard of Ningrui Residence is better for quieter details, window frames, and wall shadows.
Build your day
Two-hour core route
Enter through the East Gate. See Dunhou Residence, Ningrui Residence, and the main carving details in Gaojiaya; cross Longfeng Bridge to Hongmenbao; climb the wall for the “王”-shaped lanes; then leave. The route takes about 2 hours and works well when time is limited.
Spend a continuous stretch of time on the courtyards and main rooms in Gaojiaya before moving to Hongmenbao. If people in your group walk at different speeds, meet below the Hongmenbao wall and complete the wall view and courtyard visit separately.
Three- to four-hour fuller route
Add Sima Courtyard, Green Gate Courtyard, and Xiaoyi Shrine to the core route for a 3–4 hour visit. The “hidden-door corridor” can be an extra architectural detail, but follow the open visitor route when looking for it.
Before leaving, return to the exit area to collect luggage, get water, or continue elsewhere. Jingsheng Confucian Temple is a nearby stop outside the Wang Family Compound ticket and should be planned separately.
Get there
From Lingshi East Station
From Lingshi East Station, take Lingshi Bus 7 for CNY 2, or take a taxi for about CNY 15–20 and roughly 20 minutes. Ride-hailing cars are limited around the station and attraction, so arrange the return trip in advance or use a regular taxi.
Driving and luggage
For a self-drive visit, navigate to “Wang Family Compound Visitor Center.” Parking costs about CNY 10–15 per visit. The visitor center offers free storage for large luggage; the parking area, East Gate, and entrance east of Jingsheng Confucian Temple are different points, so check the destination before walking to the ticket entrance.
Know before you go
Guides and walking
An official group guide costs about CNY 30 per person and lasts 70–90 minutes. Private guiding is also available, and an audio guide costs about CNY 20–30. A guide is useful if you want to understand the carvings, courtyard functions, and “王”-shaped layout before taking photos.
There are no electric carts. Expect courtyards, lanes, and steps throughout the visit, and wear shoes with good grip. The full Gaojiaya–Hongmenbao circuit is not step-free; visitors with limited mobility and stroller users should confirm which areas they can reach.
Food and Jingsheng Confucian Temple
Food around the attraction receives mixed reviews. Options include Wangjia Weidao near the parking area and Mianyangtianxia on the shopping street outside the site; local choices include dao-bo noodles, oat noodle rolls, baked pears, and other Shanxi noodles. If a driver recommends a restaurant, look at the menu, prices, and recent reviews before deciding.
Jingsheng Confucian Temple is next to Wang Family Compound and is free to enter. Its Yuan-dynasty double-sided openwork stone screen, “Carp Leaping over the Dragon Gate,” is a separate stop. Count its time and entrance separately from Wang Family Compound.
