Location and entrance

Yuci Old Town is centred on No. 225 Fuxing Road in Yuci District, Jinzhong. The East Gate is the clearest starting point; navigate to “Yuci Old Town.” From Jinzhong Station, a taxi takes about 30–40 minutes, while Yuci Railway Station is about 20 minutes by taxi or can be linked by bus. There is no subway.

The outer streets can be walked throughout the day. Core attractions commonly operate around 09:00–17:00, although individual sites use different schedules and some list last-ticket times around 17:30. Night lighting is usually around 19:00. Allow 2–3 hours for a quick visit or 4–5 hours for the fuller route.

Core tickets and evening timing

The core-area through ticket is about CNY 50–78. Students and visitors aged 60–64 pay half price, while visitors aged 65 and above enter free. Reservations may be available through Yuci Old Town or the “智游山西” WeChat account; check the ticket price, discount rules, and opening hours for your date.

Weekends and holidays can bring evening crowds and temporary limits. Enter the ticketed core before 16:00 if you want time for the county office and Confucius Temple, then stay for the night lighting or an evening performance when the programme is running.

Chenghuang Temple, the county office, and the city tower

Chenghuang Temple is the strongest starting point for the old town’s religious and glazed-architecture details. Xuanjian Tower combines a Yuan-dynasty hall with a Ming-dynasty tower, and its glazed elements reward a slower look. Chenghuang Temple and the county office together make a useful first half of the main route.

At Yuci County Office, a case presentation may be scheduled on some dates. The City Tower is a practical orientation point and a good place to understand the old town’s street pattern; the programme is changeable, so treat any performance as a route bonus rather than the sole reason to enter.

Confucius Temple, Fengming Academy, and night views

The Confucius Temple preserves remains dating to the Northern Song period, and Dacheng Hall is supported by 28 dragon-carved stone columns. Fengming Academy adds a quieter courtyard, Wenchang Pavilion, and water reflections, while the old town’s street network is best understood by walking between the gates rather than visiting isolated buildings.

Qingxu Pavilion is often closed, so it is usually an exterior-view stop. Morning light works well for the buildings; photograph the City Tower from a low angle or use the depth of the cross-shaped streets, and look for reflections beside Fengming Academy. Around 19:00, the illuminated streets offer a different atmosphere if the lights are running.

For the long-street manor route outside Yuci, see Chang Family Manor.

Build your day

Two- to three-hour quick route

Enter at the East Gate, then walk to Chenghuang Temple, Yuci County Office, the City Tower, the Confucius Temple, and Fengming Academy. This sequence covers the main architectural and street-level highlights without requiring a full circuit of the outer lanes.

If a county-office case or another performance is scheduled, check its date at the entrance and adjust the order around it. Keep the free outer streets distinct from the ticketed core when deciding how much time remains in the day.

Four- to five-hour fuller route

Add West Garden, the old barbican remains, and more of North–South Street after the core route. Return to the City Tower and red-lantern corridor for the evening lighting, and leave extra time for stone paving, courtyards, and any live programme that is running that day.

On weekends or holidays, allow more time at the entrance and avoid leaving the ticketed core until late afternoon. Taxis can be harder to find after the evening programme, so decide on the return point before walking into the outer streets.

The old town is entirely walkable, but many sections are paved with stone. Take a break at Fengming Academy or a street-side food stop before continuing to West Garden.

Get there

Stations, buses, and the East Gate

From Jinzhong Station, take a taxi for about 30–40 minutes. From Yuci Railway Station, a taxi takes about 20 minutes; local buses are another option, but allow time for the final walk to the East Gate. Neither station is the old-town entrance. The East Gate is the most useful meeting and navigation point for the main historic core.

There is no subway in Yuci. For an evening visit, arrive by taxi or bus early enough to locate the gate and the return stop before the streets become crowded. The old town’s outer streets are open to ordinary walking, but the core attractions keep their own entry arrangements.

Self-drive and the next stop

Free parking is available around the old town, and the south side is usually easier for self-driving. Park before entering the pedestrian streets and use the East Gate as the walking start point rather than trying to drive between the historic buildings. Allow separate time for parking, reaching the East Gate, and entering the core attractions.

Chang Family Manor is about 40 minutes away by car. Bus 12 can be taken from the stop opposite the East Gate, but Chang Family Manor is a separate attraction with its own ticket and visit time. Leave the old town before the return journey becomes crowded if you are linking the two stops.

Know before you go

Walking, photos, and performances

The core route includes stone streets, steps, and courtyards, so comfortable shoes are more useful than a fast itinerary. In the morning, look for roof and facade details; a low-angle view of the City Tower can show the street pattern, while Fengming Academy is useful for water-reflection photos. Arrange a guide if you want more architectural context.

The county-office case, Jin opera, Nuo performances, and fire performances are date-dependent. If a programme is not running, continue with the architectural route; Qingxu Pavilion may also be closed, and neither condition prevents a complete old-town visit.

Tickets, evening return, and food

The core through ticket costs about CNY 50–78, with half price for students and visitors aged 60–64 and free entry for visitors aged 65 and above. The outer streets are free to walk, but that does not include admission to the core attractions. Read the day’s ticket and opening notice once before entering, especially if you plan to stay for the evening lighting.

Local foods include Peach Blossom noodles, guanchang, bowl-tuo, and oil cake. Peach Blossom Noodles near the East Gate in Shunchi Community is one possible meal stop, but restaurants keep their own hours. For an evening visit, arrange the return from the East Gate or another known point before the streets fill up.
