Location and entrance
Huozhou Ancient Government Office is at No. 16 Dongdajie, Huozhou, Linfen. Enter “Huozhou Government Office” in your navigation app. The entrance is the Guhuo Mingjun (古霍名郡) Archway. Inside, follow the government-office axis through the ceremonial gate, Admonition Stone Archway and main hall. It works as an independent half-day visit in Huozhou's old town, rather than an add-on walk from central Linfen.
Admission and hours
Admission is about CNY 20–40 per person. Students and visitors aged 60–64 pay half price, while visitors aged 65 and over enter free; no reservation is usually required. In peak season, roughly April to October, hours are around 08:00–18:00. In the low season, roughly November to March, hours are around 08:30–17:30. Prices and same-day opening arrangements should be confirmed on site or through a major booking platform.
How much time to allow
The short route takes about 1 hour, focusing on the Yuan-dynasty main hall and the official admonitions along the central axis. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a fuller visit with time to read the couplets and displays in the courtyards. The office has more than 180 rooms, so leave at least one continuous half-day slot if you want to follow the whole axis and study the details.

Yuan-dynasty main hall and Ming-dynasty front hall
The Yuan-dynasty main hall was built in 1304 using reduced-column construction, leaving a spacious interior. A Ming-dynasty front hall is attached to it, but its structure and proportions differ from the main hall. Liang Sicheng described the construction with the Chinese phrase “滑稽绝伦,” highlighting how unusual he found the arrangement. On site, look at the roof frame, column grid and the way the Ming front hall meets the Yuan main hall.
Admonition Stone Archway and official maxims
The central passage leads to the Admonition Stone Archway. Its south side is carved with “The world belongs to all,” and its north side with “Be clear, cautious and diligent.” Stone inscriptions on either side include “Public spirit brings clarity; integrity brings authority.” This is a useful pause for visitors interested in local administration and public ethics in imperial China. Reading the inscriptions also reveals how the office axis was meant to work.
Ceremonial gate, second hall and inner residence
The ceremonial gate stands on a raised platform and frames the courtyards behind it. The second hall and inner residence extend the visit from the formal main hall to the working and residential spaces of the office. Couplets along the route refer to Huozhou's history and government culture. Displays and access to some courtyards may change; follow the open route on the day.
Who this suits
The complete route suits visitors who enjoy government-office history, Yuan–Ming architecture and a quiet heritage visit. With limited time, focus on the archway, ceremonial gate, Admonition Stone Archway and Yuan main hall. If you also plan to see the Drum Tower, Zhusheng Temple or another nearby stop, confirm its opening separately; nearby locations do not share one service arrangement.

Short route: archway to main hall
Enter through the Guhuo Mingjun (古霍名郡) Archway, pass the ceremonial gate and Admonition Stone Archway, and go directly to the Yuan-dynasty main hall. Continue to the second hall and inner residence, then return through the rear gate or along the route you came in. The route takes about 1 hour and follows the government-office axis, making the main architectural features easy to understand on a first visit.
Highlights route: slow down for the couplets
Follow the same central axis, first studying the structure of the main hall and front hall. Then pause at the second hall, inner residence and other courtyards to read the couplets before returning to the exit. Allow about 1.5–2 hours. If a courtyard closes temporarily, stay on the visitor route rather than looking for an unofficial entrance.
A Huozhou old-town combination
Huozhou Drum Tower and Zhusheng Temple are about 5–10 minutes away on foot, making them suitable for a half-day or full-day old-town route. Their tickets, opening periods and entry rules are separate. Some nearby sites may be locked; the opening time for the Ancient Government Office applies only to that attraction.
Get there
High-speed rail and conventional rail
From Huozhou East Railway Station, take High-Speed Rail Bus 1 into town. From Huozhou Railway Station, a taxi takes about 5 minutes to the area near the office. Enter the station and attraction separately in your navigation app. Once in town, use No. 16 Dongdajie or the Guhuo Mingjun (古霍名郡) Archway as the destination.
Driving and parking
The attraction has free parking. Park and enter through the archway. Dongdajie is an urban road, so spaces and temporary traffic controls may change. Follow the signs, finish ticket inspection and continue on foot; parking for nearby temples and the Drum Tower is handled separately.
Moving around town
Inside the office, movement is mainly on foot, with steps, thresholds and brick paving between the central axis and courtyards. Visitors with limited energy can focus on the main hall and Admonition Stone Archway, then choose other courtyards according to the day's opening order. For the return trip, allow time for buses or a taxi back to Huozhou Railway Station or Huozhou East Railway Station.

Prices and displays
Prices on different platforms or at different times may fall within the CNY 20–40 range. Confirm discounts for students, visitors aged 60–64 and visitors aged 65 and over on site. Displays may be updated, while the building structure, Yuan main hall and official maxims remain the main things to see. Use the on-site signs for historical stories and exhibition explanations.
Light, walking and etiquette
Side light from 09:00 to 11:00 may bring out the texture of the timber, although the effect varies with the weather. Do not touch timberwork, inscriptions or door decorations, and leave the central passage clear when taking photographs. Older visitors and children should slow down on raised platforms and at thresholds.
Food and return
Qingping heluo, a local noodle dish, is available around Xiangjiang Square opposite the office. Huozhou is well away from central Linfen, so plan the return around Huozhou's own transport. If you add the Drum Tower or Zhusheng Temple, confirm that they are open before setting out and adjust the time accordingly.
