Location and entrance
Puxian Dongyue Temple is at No. 8 Dongyue Road, on the top of Baishan Mountain in Puxian County, Linfen. It is also called Baishan Temple. Enter “Dongyue Temple” in your navigation app and go in through the Dongyue Temple archway. The temple is on the mountain, so public transport gets you to the county town but does not solve the final climb.
Admission and hours
Admission is CNY 35 per person, with no reservation required. Students and visitors aged 60–64 pay half price, while visitors aged 65 and over enter free. Typical hours are 08:30–17:30, with entry stopping at about 17:00. Free admission on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month has been reported, but confirm it on site rather than planning around a fixed discount.
How much time to allow
The short route takes about 1 hour, and the highlights route about 1.5–2 hours. The temple buildings, hanging sculptures and colourful scenes of the Eighteen Levels of Hell sit along one main axis. The complex is not large, but the sunken cave section is dense with detail. Visitors sensitive to punishment imagery should decide in advance whether to enter the final area.

Colourful scenes of the Eighteen Levels of Hell
The sunken caves in the rear courtyard contain 15 cave chambers and more than 140 brightly painted Ming-dynasty sculptures. They depict scenes including knife mountains, oil cauldrons, sawing and tongue-pulling. This is Dongyue Temple's strongest themed section and may be unsettling for some visitors. You can remain in the upper courtyard and focus on the buildings instead; entering the caves is a personal choice.
The Xinggong Hall and Leizhenzi
The Xinggong Hall retains its original Yuan-dynasty structure. A Ming-dynasty hanging sculpture of Leizhenzi, shown with a human body, eagle-like face and wings, is mounted on the horizontal beam of the front eave. Visitors interested in the relationship between painted sculpture and historic buildings can see this hall before entering the hell caves.
Xianting Pavilion, opera tower and old catalpa trees
Xianting Pavilion retains components from different periods, including Jin-dynasty column bases, Yuan-dynasty coiling-dragon columns and a Qing-dynasty octagonal caisson ceiling. Woodcarvings in the opera tower show fishermen and woodcutters, farming and study, and the Eight Immortals celebrating longevity. Two Tang-dynasty Chinese catalpa trees in front of the pavilion are more than 1,300 years old. One is hollow but still has branches and leaves, making the trees a worthwhile short stop in the courtyard.
Who this suits
The complete route suits visitors interested in folk belief, ideas of good and evil, painted sculpture and Yuan–Ming historic buildings. If a companion dislikes frightening or punishment-related images, split up for a while: one person can wait by the Xinggong Hall, Xianting Pavilion and old trees while the other decides whether to enter the caves under the on-site rules.

Short route: main axis, then the caves
Enter through the Dongyue Temple archway and pass the mountain gate, opera tower, Xianting Pavilion and Xinggong Hall in sequence. Continue to the Eighteen Levels of Hell, then leave by the exit. The route takes about 1 hour. If you want less punishment imagery, finish after the Xinggong Hall and skip the sunken caves.
Highlights route: architectural details and an explanation
Follow the main axis first, looking at the opera tower, Xianting Pavilion and Leizhenzi. Then enter the caves and follow the 15-chamber route to study the sculptures and written explanations. Return to the upper courtyard for the old catalpa trees. Allow about 1.5–2 hours. If a guide is available, the fee may be CNY 30 for a group of any size; ask whether a guide is available and confirm the price on site.
Up, down and the return trip
A self-drive car can reach the temple entrance, where parking is relatively convenient. By public transport, take free bus 1, 2 or 3 from Puxian county town to Chengguan Hospital, then walk to the Dongyue Temple Scenic Area sign and contact the shuttle. The shuttle may stop during peak periods or holidays, so be ready to walk up the mountain and allow time for the return descent.
Get there
Driving
Driving involves the fewest transfers. Navigate to Dongyue Temple and follow the mountain road uphill; vehicles can park near the temple gate. Confirm the road conditions before driving in rain, snow, fog or at night. After parking, you still have steps and cave passages inside the temple.
County-town transport
After reaching Puxian, take bus 1, 2 or 3 to Chengguan Hospital, then walk to the scenic-area sign at the junction. The phone number on site can be used to contact the free shuttle, but its service hours and operation are not fixed. County buses only reach the road junction at the foot of the mountain; if the shuttle is not running, the climb continues on foot.
Energy and footwear
The upper courtyard, steps and sunken caves involve repeated changes in elevation. Wear shoes with good grip and slow down. Older visitors, young children and anyone with knee problems can focus on the upper-courtyard buildings and Leizhenzi; each companion can decide whether to enter the hell section.
Know before you go
Comfort with the subject matter
The Eighteen Levels of Hell sculptures show specific punishment scenes, some of them graphic. With children, or if you are unfamiliar with religious imagery or easily uncomfortable, read the entrance explanation first. Skipping the caves still leaves the Xinggong Hall, Xianting Pavilion and old trees to see.
Photography and care for relics
The caves are dim. If photography is allowed that day, flash is prohibited. Read the day's signs before taking photographs, and do not touch the sculptures, column bases or trees. Confirm the shuttle, guide fee, first-and-fifteenth-day discount and cave opening arrangements on site.
Food and heritage combinations
Return to Puxian county town for a meal after the visit. Jiahe Laochufang (家和老厨房) and Jinyang Shifu (晋阳食府) are local restaurants to look for. Dongyue Temple can be combined with Xiaoxitian in Xixian County as a self-drive or chartered-car heritage outing, but they are separate attractions. Ticket prices, guide fees, photography rules and public transport do not automatically carry over from one to the other.
