Plan at a glance

Historical remains in Old City Village

Gaoliang Commandery Ancient City is in Old City Village, Changpo Town, Gaozhou, and is also known as Changpo Old City. Search for “Gaoliang Commandery Ancient City” or “Old City Xian Tai Temple”. Its stops include the West City Gate, Old City Xian Tai Temple, Feng Bao Ancestral Hall and the ancient-city remains, making it a short visit for travellers interested in local history.

Entry is free and no reservation is needed, with 30-60 minutes usually enough for the main sights. This is a small, lightly developed village site with temples, a gate and earthen remains, rather than a reconstructed ancient city with a complete shopping street, performances and visitor facilities.

Visit in daylight as part of a half-day route

The site can be entered throughout the day, but the surrounding area has no full night-time lighting or visitor infrastructure, so daytime is the right time to go. Pair it with Yuhu Lake or other Lady Xian-related remains for a half day; if you are only coming for the gate, temple and ruins, an hour is enough.

Old City Village has narrow roads and very little food or resupply nearby. Bring water, a small snack and mosquito repellent before setting out, then walk the existing village lanes at an easy pace rather than looking for a main commercial street or large-scale attractions.

Choose your visit

30-60 minutes: gate, Old City temple and ruins

Start at the West City Gate, then see Old City Xian Tai Temple, Feng Bao Ancestral Hall and the earthen remains before returning to the village parking area. This short route moves from the gate and temple to the ruins, limiting backtracking on the village lanes.

Old City Xian Tai Temple and Gaozhou Xian Tai Temple in the city centre are two separate stops: the former is in Old City Village, while the latter is north of Panzhou Park. If you visit both in one day, treat their navigation, parking and visiting conditions separately.

Half a day: add Yuhu Lake or nearby remains

Travellers with a stronger interest in local history can combine Old City Village with the former residence of Lady Xian and the Yuhu Lake area. Visit the old city in daylight, then walk by the lake or return to central Gaozhou for a meal; the village’s limited night-time facilities make it unsuitable as the main plan after dusk.

Yuhu Scenic Area has a reference admission price of CNY 25 and a boat reference price of CNY 50, if they suit your time and interests. It is a separate destination from the ancient city, with its own transport and charges; there is no need to add it just to fill a half-day if the ruins are your only priority.

Build your day

Park at the village edge and follow one short circuit

Once at the village, first make sure the car is not blocking passing traffic, then walk towards the West City Gate. The gate, temple, ancestral hall and earthen remains are close together; seeing the buildings first and the remains last reduces retracing steps and makes it easy to return early if the weather or your group’s energy calls for it.

The walls and ruins are old remains or later reconstructions, so keep the visit to observation and interpretation rather than climbing earthworks, walls or barriers. When photographing the gate or red walls, leave space for residents and vehicles on the narrow lanes.

Have meals and restocks in town or the city centre

Food choices around Old City Village are limited, so bring water and a light snack or plan a proper meal in Changpo Town, central Gaozhou or the next stop. This keeps the visit focused on the historical remains rather than extending it while searching the village for a restaurant.

Mosquitoes can be noticeable around vegetation and low-lying areas in summer, so lightweight long sleeves, trousers and repellent are useful. In rain, heat or discomfort, see the gate and Old City Xian Tai Temple then leave; there is no need to reach every earthwork.

Get there

Driving or a hired car is the easiest way into Old City Village

Changpo Town is about 30 minutes from central Gaozhou. Search for “Gaoliang Commandery Ancient City”, “Old City Village” or “Old City Xian Tai Temple”; there is free roadside parking at the village edge, but the lanes are narrow and passing space is limited, so drive slowly and avoid being directed outside the village by an imprecise map pin.

If the map endpoint is not near the gate or temple, first confirm that you are in Old City Village, then turn around safely or ask locally. Do not drive deeper into tight lanes just to get closer, and do not park at bends or across residents’ entrances.

Public transport reaches Gaozhou; the village still needs a planned connection

From Maoming Station, travel first to central Gaozhou, then arrange a vehicle towards Changpo Town; a taxi or hired car from central Gaozhou takes about 30 minutes. Local public transport has limited coverage and frequency, so visitors without a car should arrange the return vehicle before leaving Gaozhou.

There is little reliable waiting space or resupply in the village, so do not wait until dusk to call for a ride. When agreeing a meeting point with a driver, use the village edge or a clearly named gate or temple rather than the broad label “ancient city”.

Know before you go

Set expectations for a small, dispersed heritage stop

The value here lies in the historical traces and Lady Xian connections within Old City Village, not in large visitor facilities. The gate, temples, hall and earthworks are limited in scale, so travellers looking for extensive reconstructed buildings, shopping streets or interactive activities should make this a stop along the way rather than a full-day destination.

With 30-60 minutes, you can see the main points at an unhurried pace; with more time, add Yuhu Lake or another separate attraction. Treat it as a history-focused walk rather than a hunt for a single “ancient city centre” and the visit will make better sense.

Prepare for narrow lanes, mosquitoes and few supplies

Village lanes are shared by walkers, motorcycles and cars, so walk at the edge and watch for traffic. Mosquitoes can be heavy when vegetation is dense; repellent, long sleeves and trousers, and shoes with grip are more useful than elaborate photography gear.

There is no full range of restaurants, shops or night-tour services in the village, so daytime entry and exit with water in hand is the most reliable approach. Do not enter private yards, farmland or closed archaeological areas for photographs; rest or eat later in town or the city centre.
