Plan around museum hours, then extend into the park
Maoming Open-Pit Mine Museum stands on Cailu Road in the core area of the Open-Pit Mine Ecological Park. Housed in a converted former factory building, it takes about 1-1.5 hours to understand the history of oil shale mining, the petroleum industry and mine restoration. Entry is free and usually needs no reservation; allow 3-4 hours for a half-day if you add the surrounding park.
The museum closes on Mondays. From Tuesday to Friday, it opens 09:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:30; weekends and public holidays are 09:00-17:30, with last entry at 17:10. The park itself is open all day, but those hours do not replace the museum's admission schedule.
Use the galleries for industrial history and give the lake its own time
The displays cover oil-shale specimens, exploration tools, models of oil equipment and ecological restoration. Work through the floors rather than rushing in after a lakeside photo stop. The second-floor viewing platform looks over the red-brick building and mine lake, making it a natural extension of the exhibition visit.
Visitors who want to continue around the lake can start at the museum, then go to the small wooden house, a lakeside path or a cycling route. Do not treat the museum as only a parking point for the park: its exhibitions, pacing and opening hours merit a distinct visit.

1.5-2 hours: see the exhibitions, use the viewing platform, then choose one park ride
With limited time, visit the main displays floor by floor, stop at the second-floor viewing platform, then choose the round-lake small train from the forecourt or a short walk by the water. This suits older relatives, children and visitors mainly interested in the open-pit mine's history, without requiring a long exposed circuit of the park.
The round-lake small train is about CNY 30 per person, free for children below 1.2 metres, and takes about 40-50 minutes without intermediate stops. If you choose it, finish the exhibitions you most want to see before departure and accept that the later part of the ride offers limited freedom to stop.
Half a day: museum first, then cycle towards the west shore
For both the displays and lake views, arrive in the morning or early afternoon, complete the museum, then walk about 10 minutes towards the small wooden house before renting a bike or small electric vehicle. From there, continue anti-clockwise through Laomo Forest, Huaide Pavilion and the west-shore lawn. Separating the indoor visit, lakeside photographs and evening light avoids rushing back to the museum before it closes.
Families can group the East Gate children's playground, the forecourt activity area, museum learning and the small train into one half-day. Inside the entrance, a table on the left has one multicolour stamp and three single-colour stamps; bring your own paper. Treat this as a small extra, not a reason to shorten the exhibition visit.
Build your day
Follow the exhibition sequence instead of making the lake the only objective
Start with the oil-shale, exploration and oil-production displays, then move to the sections on the mine lake and ecological restoration before using the viewing platform. This gives the industrial history behind the present-day lake and former factory buildings, rather than passing through the galleries only for the building photographs.
If entry is temporarily controlled because the galleries are busy, take a short walk nearby and return when entry is available, but do not leave the visit until after the 17:10 last-entry time. Groups need to contact the management office at least two days ahead; individual visitors should follow the on-site QR and admission instructions.
After the museum, add one lakeside section rather than repeating the whole park route
If you still have energy after the museum, choose the small wooden house and its nearby shore, or use a rental vehicle for one section towards Huaide Pavilion or the west-shore lawn. There is no need to copy every park stop into the museum visit. For a full lake circuit, use the ecological park's cycling route as the main activity of the day.
Before leaving, confirm the rental return point, small-train departure point or car park location. The museum parking area and the deeper park sections are not in the same place, so allow time to collect the car and leave after an evening lake stop.
Maoming Open-Pit Mine Museum works well as a 1-1.5 hour introduction to industrial history and exhibitions before a lake circuit by bike or a short walk in Maoming Open-Pit Mine Ecological Park. The museum has its own closure times, and the ecological park's access and lakeside activities should not be understood through the museum timetable.
Get there
Park outside the museum; cars do not enter the park
Drive to the “Open-Pit Mine Museum Car Park,” which has about 330 spaces, or to the Wind Chime Flower Sea car park, with about 207 spaces. Reference parking is CNY 3 for up to three hours, capped at CNY 20. Cars cannot enter the park, so you will still need to walk or use park transport after parking.
Spaces can be tight near 11:00 at weekends, so arrive earlier if you want an unhurried museum visit. Do not park where you obstruct traffic, and do not walk all the way in from a distant main gate before looking for the museum.
The bus reaches the East Gate; a taxi from Maoming Station takes about half an hour
City bus 10 reaches the “Open-Pit Mine Ecological Park” stop, with the East Gate about 50 metres away. A taxi from Maoming Station takes about 30 minutes and costs about CNY 30-40. Once there, visit the museum within its opening hours first, then decide whether to continue into the park.
Non-drivers who plan to see the lake later in the day should estimate the time back to the city or railway station in advance. The lakeside area is large, and leaving a viewpoint still involves walking to the East Gate, a car park or a ride-hailing point; do not judge the return by straight-line distance alone.
Know before you go
Monday is not a museum day; weekends work best with an early arrival
The museum is closed all day on Monday, and Tuesday-Friday also include a midday closure. Plan for the type of day before travelling instead of treating the outdoor park as an automatic replacement after you arrive. The museum is open through the day at weekends and on public holidays, but afternoon visitor numbers can rise, so an earlier arrival is better for both the exhibitions and viewing platform.
Free entry without a reservation does not mean immediate access at every time. When gallery visitor numbers are high, temporary admission controls may apply; follow the staff's queueing and entry arrangements or spend time nearby first.
Prepare as you would for an outdoor visit if you extend into the park
If you continue around the lake after the museum, bring sun protection, a hat, water and mosquito repellent. Shade and supplies are limited by the lake, and a light layer can help in the wind at the beginning or end of the day. Do not enter the deep lake or cross barriers and wet shore edges for a photograph.
Shared bikes and multi-person pedal bikes, small electric vehicles and boats are separately charged, with reference prices of CNY 30-50 per hour, CNY 68 per hour and CNY 45 per person. Before choosing, look at the available vehicles, return point and departure arrangements. There is no need to buy an unsuitable combination just to cover every activity.
