Location, tickets and hours

Six Dynasties Museum is at 302 Changjiang Road, about 100 metres east of Presidential Palace. Adult admission is about CNY 30, with the usual half-price ticket for students and visitors aged 60–69. Advance reservation is usually not required; buy through the Nanjing Municipal Museum General Office mini-program or on site. During holidays or special exhibitions, check the online reservation option in advance.

The usual hours are Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:30, with final entry at 17:00. Mondays are normally closed except public holidays. Allow 1–1.5 hours for a quick visit or 2–3 hours for the complete route.

The three main levels

The basement covers the Six Dynasties imperial city ruins and rammed-earth wall; the second floor covers Six Dynasties objects; the third floor focuses on architecture, light and city views. The first floor may host a special exhibition, which can be added according to the day’s signs.

The museum and Presidential Palace have separate tickets. Although they are about 100 metres apart, one ticket does not cover the other. If you combine them, choose the main visit first and allocate the remaining time accordingly.

Basement ruins and second-floor objects

The “Six Dynasties Imperial City” exhibition in the basement lets visitors see rammed-earth walls from about 1,800 years ago. The second floor contains objects such as the Celadon Lotus Zun and the Underglazed Painted Figure Pattern Dish, making it the main stop for visitors interested in early Nanjing history and celadon ceramics.

Visitors who want more historical content should spend longer on the basement and second floor. The one-hour route keeps only the main displays; the 2–3 hour route adds the building and any special exhibition.

Light and the city window

The third-floor full-height window can frame the eaves of Presidential Palace and the modern skyline. Morning or midday light is usually better for this view. The bamboo-shadow screen on the second floor is best before 10:00, while the tile-end wall in the basement suits close-up photos of patterns and materials.

The museum suits visitors who enjoy architecture, light and a quieter exhibition setting, as well as anyone looking for a smaller museum after a busy city attraction. Follow the exhibition notices and avoid staying too long at a narrow window or stair landing.

Build your day

A 1–1.5 hour quick route

Move from the basement to the second and third floors: see the rammed-earth wall, the celadon and Six Dynasties objects, then the full-height window and architectural spaces. If a special exhibition is open on the first floor, check its theme and the time remaining before adding it.

This route avoids backtracking and works well after Presidential Palace. Allow a few minutes for the window photo, but do not occupy the same position for a long time.

A 2–3 hour complete route

Start in the basement “Six Dynasties Imperial City”, continue to “Six Dynasties Style” on the second floor and “Six Dynasties Figures” on the third floor, then visit the first-floor special exhibition if one is open. The sequence combines the historical content with the building design.

There is no dedicated car park or drinking-water station. Arrange water and restroom needs before the complete route. After leaving, walk to Presidential Palace, 1912 or Kechang Street rather than looking for a full meal inside the museum.

Get there

Daxinggong Station

Take Metro Line 2 or 3 to Daxinggong Station, Exit 5, and walk about 5–10 minutes to the museum. Presidential Palace is about 100 metres to the west, so the two attractions are easy to connect on foot.

Parking and nearby walks

The museum has no dedicated car park. If you drive, consider the Nanjing Library car park, about 600 metres away, or the 1912 district car park, about a 5-minute walk. Holiday availability can change, so public transport is more reliable for opening-time visits.

Know before you go

Quiet periods and facilities

Arriving at opening time on a weekday, or using the lunchtime period, is usually quieter than a weekend afternoon. The museum has free lockers, but mother-and-child rooms and family restrooms are limited; assess the route in advance if travelling with children or anyone with reduced mobility.

There is no drinking-water station or vending machine, so bring water. Cultural-product stamp stations include both free and paid options; paid stamps usually require a purchase in the gift shop, so join only if it suits your visit.

Wheelchairs and nearby breaks

The museum has no public wheelchair fleet. Shared wheelchairs may require a CNY 199 deposit, with the first 30 minutes free and about CNY 10 per hour after that. Ask about the day’s equipment and access conditions on arrival if you need a wheelchair.

Kechang Street is about a 10-minute walk away and has pastries, braised chicken and other snacks. Restaurants near Presidential Palace also serve Nanjing cuisine. Plan food and rest after the museum so the exhibition route stays intact.
