Industrial heritage area and visit length
Tangzha Ancient Town is in Tangzha Town, Chongchuan District, Nantong. Its main story is tied to the Dasheng Cotton Mill, founded by Zhang Jian in 1895. The Tongyang Canal runs through the area, and visitors can enter from the old street on the east bank, the former mill area on the west bank or Dasheng Wharf.
The public streets are free and open all day. Indoor venues such as the Dasheng Cotton Mill history display and parts of the 1895 Cultural and Creative Park usually open around 09:00–16:30, with possible Monday or lunch-break closures. A quick route takes about 1.5 hours; a full visit covering the industrial remains, creative park, Beishi Street and She Garden takes about 3–4 hours.
When to visit
Tangzha suits visitors interested in industrial history, architecture and photography, as well as city walkers who prefer a lived-in neighbourhood. Shops are less consistently open on weekdays. Afternoon and early evening can combine the daytime streets with canal night views, but indoor venues should be placed in the morning or after the lunch break.

Dasheng Cotton Mill and the clock tower
The former Dasheng Cotton Mill is the main focus. The 1915 Dasheng Clock Tower, workshops, Qinghua workshop, public office and experts' residences preserve the scale of Nantong's early industrial spaces. History and Zhang Jian enthusiasts can focus on the mill area; photographers can use the clock tower, red-brick walls, canal and bridges as subjects.
The 1895 park, Beishi Street and She Garden
The 1895 Cultural and Creative Park reuses old factory buildings and includes selected experiences such as movable-type printing, craft workshops and cafés. Beishi Street contains a traditional-style commercial street, a surname culture hall and the former Dadane River Shipping Company site. She Garden adds a compact Chinese garden section to the industrial route.
The public streets can be walked all day, but shops, galleries and workshops each have their own hours. Visitors who want night views can arrive in the late afternoon and walk along the Tongyang Canal and Yangjiawan Bridge; indoor venues that close during the day should not be treated as night attractions.
Build your day
About 1.5 hours: an industrial-heritage short route
Enter from the Dasheng Wharf archway and walk past Zhang Jian Square, the Dasheng Clock Tower and the exterior of the 1895 Cultural and Creative Park. With limited time, focus on the industrial landscape on the west bank, then leave through the nearby streets.
This route gives first-time visitors a quick introduction to Tangzha and works well as an early-evening stop in a Nantong city itinerary. If an indoor venue is open, choose one near the clock tower; leave the other buildings for another visit or follow the time available on site.
About 3–4 hours: a full route
Start at Dasheng Wharf, then visit Zhang Jian Square, the Dasheng Cotton Mill clock tower, the public office and experts' residences. Cross the river on foot to the 1895 Cultural and Creative Park, continue to Beishi Street and She Garden, and finish near the canal for a break or night views.
This route separates the industrial remains, creative spaces, street area and garden. Choose indoor venues according to their hours. If you arrive in the afternoon, visit the time-limited galleries first, then leave Beishi Street and the canal for the evening.
Get there
Bus and metro
Bus routes 1 and 101 serve Tangzha Ancient Town Bus Parking Lot. Take Nantong Metro Line 1 to Tangzha Park Station, then transfer to a bus or cycle about 2 kilometres to the town centre; walking directly from the station is less practical with luggage.
Driving and getting around
Parking areas include Tangzha Ancient Town Bus Parking Lot and Tangzha Beishi Scenic Area Parking Lot. Once inside the town, walk between the main sites; shared bicycles or electric carts can reduce the walking depending on the areas open that day.
Know before you go
Street access and venue hours
The public streets are open all day, while indoor displays and experience venues usually operate around 09:00–16:30 and may close on Mondays or during lunch. After arriving, look at the day's opening information before choosing the Dasheng Cotton Mill display or an indoor space in the 1895 park.
All-day street access does not mean that every shop, café and gallery is open all day. Weekdays are better for architecture and local street life; weekends usually have more open shops and leisure visitors.
Expectations and food
Tangzha combines a residential area with a historic district, so its commercial offer is less consistent than that of a fully enclosed attraction. Local options include Xiaoqin Caoxiedi flatbread, Shunxingyuan and Sun Da Bao, subject to their location and opening hours on the day.
