Ticket and opening hours

Baoguo Temple Ancient Architecture Museum is in Anshan Village, Hongtang Subdistrict, Jiangbei District, Ningbo. The reference adult ticket is CNY 20; students and visitors aged 60–69 have a reference half-price ticket, and visitors over 70 have a reference free ticket. Usual hours are 8:00–17:00 from April to November, with ticket sales ending at 16:30, and 8:30–16:30 from December to March, with ticket sales ending at 16:00. It is usually closed on Mondays, except for statutory holidays.

Entrance and visit time

The main gate is the usual entrance. From the gate, it takes about 15–20 minutes to walk uphill on stone steps to the main buildings. Allow about 1.5 hours for the main historic buildings, 2.5–3 hours for a first visit that includes the rear-hill path, and about 1 extra hour for the rear-hill walk on its own.

What kind of visit this is

This is a good stop for visitors interested in historic buildings, timber structures and architectural museums. The main visit combines temple buildings and wooded paths, so comfortable shoes with good grip matter more than adding many food or shopping stops. Older visitors and children should choose a shorter route according to their comfort on steps.

The Northern Song Mahavira Hall

The Northern Song Mahavira Hall was built in 1013 and is the museum’s main architectural focus. Spend time looking at the dougong brackets, mortise-and-tenon joints, melon-rib composite columns, beam paintings and caisson ceiling. Protection and photography inside the building follow the on-site rules.

The gate, stele and old pond

Walking uphill from the gate, you can see Linglong Spring, the Tang-period stele, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Bell and Drum Towers, the Sutra Library and Jingtu Pond. The buildings connect closely with the surrounding forest, while light and weather affect the timber details, pond reflections and rear-hill views.

Who should choose this visit

Architecture enthusiasts can plan the full 2.5–3-hour route. Families can use the mortise-and-tenon models and building details for a short learning visit. Visitors who enjoy walking can continue from behind the temple to Xiangbi Peak, Wangri Pavilion and Maofeng Pavilion, but the rear-hill route takes separate time from the museum grounds.

Build your day

The 1.5-hour highlights route

Enter through the gate and follow the steps past Linglong Spring, the Tang-period stele, the Northern Song Mahavira Hall, the Bell and Drum Towers and the Sutra Library before leaving. The uphill stone steps take about 15–20 minutes. If time is limited, reduce the rear-hill section and focus on the Mahavira Hall and its structural details.

The 2.5–3-hour full route

Follow the gate, Xianren Bridge, Linglong Spring, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, Jingtu Pond, Guanyin Hall, the Sutra Library and the rear-hill path. Whether the rear-hill path can continue to Wangri Pavilion depends on the weather, your energy and the open route that day. In wet weather, finish the main buildings first.

The one-hour rear-hill path

Climb from behind the temple to Xiangbi Peak, Wangri Pavilion and Maofeng Pavilion, then return along the path or leave according to the route available. This suits visitors comfortable with continuous walking and slopes. Do not estimate the hill section using the time needed for the museum’s main route.

Get there

Public transport

Take Metro Line 4 to Zhuangqiao Station, Exit B, or Lijiang Road Station, then transfer to bus 338 or Rural Tour Line 1 to Baoguo Temple Station. You still need to walk into the scenic area after getting off, so leave extra time for the bus schedule and final connection.

Driving and parking

By car, search for Baoguo Temple Ancient Architecture Museum Parking and follow the signs towards the gate. Parking capacity, fees and weekend management follow the same-day arrangement. After parking, you still have the stone-step approach; the parking area is not the entrance to the main buildings.

Connecting with Cicheng Ancient County Town

Baoguo Temple and Cicheng can form a northern Ningbo heritage day, but they require a vehicle or public-transport transfer and are not one continuous walk. Check Baoguo Temple’s closing time first, then decide how much time remains for Cicheng. Buy the two tickets separately.

Know before you go

Closing days and seasonal hours

The museum is usually closed on Mondays, and the opening and last-ticket times differ between April–November and December–March. Winter afternoons end earlier. If you want the rear-hill path, finish the main buildings first rather than starting the hill near closing time.

Photography and protection

Photography is prohibited inside the Mahavira Hall, including flash use. Other interiors, timber elements and barriers follow the on-site rules. When photographing the gate, courtyards or Jingtu Pond, keep the path clear and do not touch the historic buildings.

Steps, mosquitoes and weather

The route from the foot of the hill to the main buildings is a continuous uphill walk. Wear flat shoes with good grip, and let older visitors and children set the pace. The wooded area has mosquitoes, so bring repellent and water in summer. Shorten the route when the steps, rear hill or pond edge are wet.
