Plan at a glance

Park scope and access

Moon Lake is an open lake district in central Ningbo. Entry is free, no reservation is required, and the public park can generally be walked throughout the day. Lakeside exhibition spaces, historic buildings, boats and other services have their own operating conditions; the park’s access does not set their business hours.

Entrances and visit time

The South Gate is close to Tianyi Pavilion, the North Gate is close to Drum Tower, and the Southwest Gate works well from the wider city centre. Allow about 2 hours for a lakeside walk including Fangcao Islet and Jiuqu Bridge. Add the lakeside venues, Chaoran Pavilion and Tianyi Pavilion, and allow 3–4 hours.

What kind of visit this is

Moon Lake suits a slow city-centre walk, garden viewing and a short rest. Early morning or 16:00–18:00 avoids the strongest midday sun. You can walk by the lake at night, but lighting, venues and boat services operate separately.

Choose your visit

Fangcao Islet and the lake centre

Fangcao Islet, Jiuqu Bridge and the Lakeside Pavilion form a concentrated lake-view section and are a practical introduction for first-time visitors. The Academicians’ Grove, old trees and reflections on the water reward a slower walk. Mist, light and water conditions depend on the weather.

Historic buildings by the lake

He Mizhen Shrine, the Goryeo Envoys’ Site and Yintai Mansion are spread around the lake, with separate access and opening conditions. Chaoran Pavilion can be used as a viewpoint, but access to its upper level depends on what is open that day.

Boats and leisure

Some piers may offer pedal boats or electric boats. Operation, price, deposit and usable water area follow the day’s arrangement. Families can walk along the lake first, then decide whether to take a boat according to the weather and service status.

Build your day

The two-hour lakeside route

Enter through the South Gate, pass the Academicians’ Grove, Fangcao Islet, Jiuqu Bridge and the Lakeside Pavilion, then leave through the North Gate. This route mainly uses public park space. If construction or a temporary barrier changes the path, follow the on-site passage instead of circling the lake again.

The 3–4-hour culture route

From Tianyi Pavilion’s South Garden exit, walk to Moon Lake’s South Gate, then continue past He Mizhen Shrine, the Goryeo Envoys’ Site, Yintai Mansion, Fangcao Islet, Chaoran Pavilion and the Zhuyu area before reaching Drum Tower from the North Gate. Tianyi Pavilion, Moon Lake Park and the lakeside venues have separate tickets and opening hours.

An evening and night route

Walk along the lakeside boardwalk in the evening and watch how the light changes on the water and old buildings. Then decide whether to stay longer according to the day’s lighting and venue openings. At night, keep the walk short and confirm the metro, bus or taxi return before staying late.

Get there

Metro and walking

Take Line 1 to Ximenkou or Drum Tower Station, or Line 2 to Chenghuangmiao Station, Exit A. The walk to the lake is about 5–10 minutes. Choose the South or North Gate according to whether Tianyi Pavilion or Drum Tower is your next stop.

Driving and parking

By car, you can search for parking near the northwest entrance of Moon Lake Shengyuan, or use parking around Tianyi Pavilion or Moon Lake. Capacity and fees change with time of day, holidays and local management, so re-plan from the actual entrance after parking.

Moving around the lake

Moon Lake is best explored on foot, with distances between lakeside points calculated along the actual path. Boats, bicycles and other rentals do not replace walking around the lake. Bring water and sun protection for a longer visit.

Know before you go

Different hours for the park and venues

The park can generally be walked throughout the day, while exhibition spaces, historic buildings and services may close at midday, on Mondays or at other times. If you are visiting for an exhibition, do not infer indoor access from the park’s open status alone.

Mosquitoes, sun and weather

The lake has dense greenery, so summer brings both mosquitoes and strong sun. Early morning and late afternoon are more comfortable for a longer walk. In heat, thunderstorms or slippery conditions, shorten the lakeside section and follow the on-site instructions.

Boats and photography

Follow the pier rules, deposit requirements and time limits for any boat service. If the service is suspended, do not enter the water yourself. Keep paths clear when photographing buildings, the lake or other visitors, especially on bridges and narrow sections.
