Permanent galleries, special exhibitions and hours

Ningbo Museum is at 1000 Shounan Middle Road in Yinzhou District, Ningbo. Permanent galleries are free and usually do not require a reservation; special exhibitions may require a separate ticket or reservation. Usual hours are 9:00–17:00 Tuesday to Sunday, with entry ending at 16:00. It is usually closed on Mondays, except for statutory holidays.

Summer evening hours

In July and August, the museum may stay open until 21:00 on Tuesday to Thursday and Saturday to Sunday, with entry ending at 20:00. Friday does not follow the same extended schedule. During an evening opening, the third floor usually closes after 17:00 and the second-floor children’s area usually closes after 16:00, so visit upper floors and the terrace first.

How long to allow

Allow about 2 hours for the main first- and second-floor displays and the building exterior. First-time visitors who also want the folk-life gallery, roof space or a special exhibition should allow 3–4 hours. Queues and security checks for special exhibitions add time.

Choose your visit

The Wapan brick wall and building

The exterior uses large quantities of reclaimed old bricks and tiles. The building can be viewed from the entrance, outside walls and higher platforms. Weather and time of day change the texture of the wall, and photography must stay within the open areas and follow safety instructions.

Ningbo history galleries

The permanent history galleries on the second floor explain Hemudu culture, maritime connections and the development of Ningbo. Displays change according to the museum’s exhibition plan, so do not assume that an object from another institution is currently on permanent display here.

Folk life, the children’s area and special exhibitions

The third-floor folk-life gallery and children’s area suit families and visitors interested in local culture. Temporary exhibitions have their own ticket and opening conditions. Since floors can close at different times, families should identify the children’s area and exhibition floor before choosing the rest of the route.

Build your day

The two-hour highlights route

After entering, confirm the day’s special exhibitions and floor access, then visit the first-floor galleries, second-floor history displays and the building exterior. If you want the third floor, go there first for the folk-life gallery or terrace, then return to the first and second floors. Follow the floor closing times especially carefully during evening openings.

The 3–4-hour full route

Plan the first-floor special or temporary exhibition, the second-floor history galleries, the third-floor folk-life gallery and the roof space, then rest near the exit. Reservations, security checks and queues for special exhibitions are variable, so leave a buffer and let each floor take the time available that day.

A summer evening route

If you use the evening opening, arrive around 16:00 and finish the third-floor content first, then visit the first and second floors. The third floor may close after 17:00 and the second-floor children’s area after 16:00. An evening opening does not mean every floor stays open later.

Get there

Metro and walking

Take Metro Line 3 or 5 to Yinzhou District Government Station, Exit C. The walk to the nearby area takes about 5–10 minutes, but the museum is still about 1 km farther on foot. In hot weather, prepare sun protection or use a short transfer for the final section.

Driving and entrances

The museum has East and South Gates, with the East Gate closer to the service desk and lockers. By car, search for Ningbo Museum Parking; nearby commercial parking may also be available. Capacity, fees and holiday queues follow the same-day arrangement.

Moving inside

The museum has several floors, and moving between galleries, the children’s area, the terrace and the lockers takes time. Small luggage may be left in the on-site lockers, subject to their size and opening rules. Bring water and a light layer according to the weather and air-conditioning.

Know before you go

Closing and entry times

The museum is usually closed on Mondays, and Tuesday to Sunday still has a last-entry time. Evening openings, special exhibitions and the children’s area have extra timing conditions. Decide which floors matter most before arrival so you do not plan to visit them after closing.

Special exhibitions and changing displays

Free permanent galleries do not mean that temporary exhibitions are free. Special exhibitions may require a separate ticket or reservation. Exhibitions, stamps, interactive equipment and object displays change; plan around the museum’s lasting themes rather than one temporary display.

Photography and rest

The exterior, stairs, corridors and terrace are useful places to study the building, but do not block passages or approach dangerous edges while taking photographs. Food, seats and lockers follow the day’s operation; for a longer visit, arrange supplies in the commercial area outside if needed.
