Taishan Island

台山岛

Plan Taishan Island with the limited ferry, multi-day commitment, supplies and cliff safety.

Plan at a glance

An offshore island with limited boat service

Taishan Island is in the southeast waters of Shacheng Harbor, Fuding, Ningde, Fujian, and is the western Taishan Island in the Taishan Archipelago. The mainland departure point is Fuding Shacheng Pier, and the voyage takes about 1.5–2 hours. The island is free to enter, but confirm and reserve the boat ticket in advance.

There are few boats outside holidays, and some dates may have only one outbound or return service, possibly just one boat a day. Confirm the exact date before setting out rather than treating one set of dates as a year-round schedule. Prepare for at least two days and one night; this is not a last-minute half-day add-on.

Fitness, supplies, and who it suits

Island routes include slopes, grassland, reefs, and cliffs, while supplies and washing facilities are limited. This suits visitors with outdoor experience who can accept a long boat ride and simple island conditions. It is not a good fit for families who need stable transport, complete facilities, or an easy stroller-friendly visit.

Because boat service is limited, missing the return may mean waiting another day. Confirm the tickets, accommodation, water, food, and return arrangement together before leaving; do not decide after looking only at the attraction name.

Choose your visit

Umbrella Reef, Yixiantian, and the stone-house village

Umbrella Reef is a coastal erosion feature that may only be approachable at low tide. Nearby Yixiantian also requires a safe water level and open conditions. Taishan Village is the island's main settlement, where stone houses and cliff terrain show a way of life different from an urban seaside resort.

The West Taishan Lighthouse and grassland can be visited for distant views or walking photography, but roads, wind, and open boundaries may change each day. Do not treat a starry sky, unusual light on the sea, or animal activity as guaranteed, and do not enter an unguarded cliff edge for a photo.

Who it suits

Taishan Island is better suited to visitors with hiking and camping experience who want to see a remote island and possibly camp under the stars. Older adults, young children, and anyone who needs reliable showers, charging, or communications should carefully assess whether an overnight stay is appropriate.

If you only want sea views or photos of the stone houses, there is no need to complete a full island loop. A shorter route with the return boat as the first priority is safer than trying to cover every reef and ridge.

Build your day

A two-day, one-night basic route

Take the boat to the island on the first day, then visit Umbrella Reef, the loop road, or Taishan Village according to your accommodation, the weather, and the tide. Before leaving on the second day, take a short walk to Yixiantian or another point confirmed to be open, then leave on the scheduled boat. Withdraw from Umbrella Reef and the reef area before the tide rises.

The island has no urban-style commercial facilities for last-minute supplies. After arriving, confirm your accommodation, water, return meeting point, and the routes open that day. Do not spend the entire first day taking photos without checking these essentials.

A three-day, two-night hiking route

Visitors with outdoor experience can use the first day for arrival and the first part of the island loop, the second day for the ridgeline, grassland, and lighthouse area, and the third morning for a short walk before leaving. Adjust every section for wind, tide, and the boundaries open on site.

Do not assume that campsites, gas canisters, wind-resistant tents, or washing facilities are fully provided. If you camp, prepare on a self-sufficient basis and confirm the locally permitted camping area in advance.

A longer route with Fuding or Xiapu

After leaving Taishan Island, you can continue to Taimu Mountain or the Xiapu mudflats, but these are separate overland journeys, not nearby stops on the island. Because the boat schedule is limited, determine the island departure date first and then plan the following cities and attractions.

Taishan Island, Yushan Island, and the Sijiao Archipelago use different piers and boat schedules. They do not share an island-hopping route and cannot serve as one another's same-day backup boat.

Get there

Driving to Shacheng Pier

For driving, navigate to “Shacheng Town Central Fishing Port Pier” and usually leave the car in a nearby parking area. Parking around the pier may be free or low-cost, but confirm the car's location, return time, and whether you need to walk back to it after arriving.

Do not treat taking a private car onto the island as the default option. Island roads are narrow, and transporting a vehicle and meeting the landing conditions require separate confirmation.

High-speed rail and bus

From Fuding Station, take a taxi or bus to Fuding South Bus Station, then take a coach to Shacheng Pier. The coach ride takes about 1 hour and commonly costs about CNY 20. Public transport also requires waiting and the sea crossing, so do not schedule a long evening transfer immediately after the return.

Confirm that the boarding point is Shacheng Pier rather than another pier in Fuding city. If you miss the boat, do not rely on a last-minute extra passenger boat or private speedboat.

Know before you go

Boats, seasickness, and the return risk

The voyage to Taishan Island is long, and the boat type and waves affect the ride. Anyone prone to seasickness should prepare medicine and water and follow the crew's seating instructions. Do not treat holiday extra services as a fixed guarantee.

There may be only one boat a day, so missing it can severely limit the return. Before departure, confirm the outbound boat, return boat, accommodation, and land transport one by one, leaving spare time for changing weather.

Supplies, tides, and cliffs

Water, food, charging, washing, and phone signal on the island cannot be expected to meet city standards. Bring dry food, drinking water, charging equipment, and windproof clothing. Camping equipment must cope with strong coastal winds, and you should confirm separately what facilities a homestay or campsite provides.

Umbrella Reef, the reef area, and Yixiantian can become dangerous with a rising tide or wet surfaces. Some cliffs have no guardrails. Do not climb remote paths, approach the edge, or walk to unfamiliar coastlines at night.
