Entry and opening hours
Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple is at No. 176 West Street in Licheng District. Enter through the south gate at Ziyun Screen or the west gate near West Street. Admission is free and no reservation is required. The temple is open from 06:30 to 17:30, with last entry at 17:00; the Hongyi Master Memorial Hall stops admitting visitors earlier, at 16:30.
Kaiyuan Temple fits well into a morning or early-afternoon old-city walk. West Street, the lanes outside the temple and other old-city sites keep their own arrangements, so do not apply the temple's hours to them.
Time and walking effort
Allow about 1.5 hours if you only want the principal buildings. To include the halls, the Ganlu Ordination Platform, the Hongyi Master Memorial Hall, the ancient-ship display, both stone pagodas and the mulberry tree, allow 2.5–3 hours.

The twin pagodas and main halls
Kaiyuan Temple suits first-time visitors who want to see Buddhist architecture and maritime Silk Road heritage in one old-city stop. The twin pagodas are the clearest landmarks, while the Mahavira Hall, Ganlu Ordination Platform, old banyan trees and Qilin Wall are spread through the temple grounds and can be selected according to your interests.
Maritime heritage within the temple visit
A longer visit can include the Hongyi Master Memorial Hall and the ancient-ship display inside the temple, along with the stone and wood details in the halls. The ancient-ship display is within Kaiyuan Temple and is not the main Quanzhou Museum of Overseas Communication History on Donghu Street; their entrances, booking arrangements and opening rules are separate.
Build your day
The 1.5-hour short route
Enter through the south gate at Ziyun Screen, then visit the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the twin pagodas and the thousand-year-old mulberry tree before leaving through the west gate toward West Street. This order suits visitors with limited time or those who prefer not to walk for several hours, and focuses on the main buildings and central axis.
The 2.5–3-hour detailed route
From Ziyun Screen, follow the Hall of the Heavenly Kings, the worship courtyard, the Mahavira Hall, the Ganlu Ordination Platform, the Sutra Repository, the Hongyi Master Memorial Hall, the ancient-ship display, the east pagoda, the west pagoda, the mulberry tree and the Qilin Wall before leaving through the west gate. Check the separate last-entry times for the memorial hall and the ship display instead of leaving them until the end without a plan.
After leaving through the west gate, you can continue on foot into West Street, but that is an old-city activity outside the temple. If you arrive late in the afternoon, see the temple areas that are confirmed open first, then decide whether to extend the walk to West Street.
Get there
Entering the temple and moving through the old city
You can take a bus to the “Kaiyuan Temple West Gate” stop. For short trips within the old city, use Xiaobai or walk in from the edge of West Street. From Quanzhou Railway Station or outside the old city, taking a taxi to the edge of West Street and walking in is usually easier than driving into the core.
Do not drive into the West Street core if you can avoid it. The old-city roads have time-based traffic restrictions and limited parking; leave the car outside, then walk or continue by Xiaobai.
Know before you go
Etiquette and photography
Dress respectfully and avoid bare shoulders and very short skirts or shorts. Do not photograph Buddha images inside the halls or use flash. Free incense may be available according to the temple's arrangements, so there is no need to buy expensive incense or blessing plaques from vendors at the entrance.
Kaiyuan Temple is an active Buddhist temple, so photography should not come before religious etiquette. The east pagoda, west pagoda, ancient-ship display and other exhibits are separate stops within the temple grounds, not separately ticketed attractions.
Timing
Before 08:00 is often quieter, while the light on the twin pagodas is softer after 16:00. You still need to follow the 17:00 last-entry time and the earlier admission cutoffs for the halls. When the temple is busy, complete the central axis and pagodas first, then decide whether to add the indoor memorial hall and ancient-ship display.
