Plan at a glance

Two exhibition locations, not one entrance

The main Quanzhou Museum of Overseas Communication History is at No. 425 Donghu Street in Fengze District. The Quanzhou Bay Ancient-Ship Exhibition Hall is inside Kaiyuan Temple on West Street in Licheng District. They are not the same building, and their entrances, reservations, opening hours and exhibition access must be handled separately.

The main museum's address routing, booking method, opening hours, access to the ancient-ship hall, facilities and guided-tour arrangements may change with the museum's current operations, so confirm these items separately before travelling. You can combine the two locations as maritime Silk Road history stops, but do not turn unconfirmed shows, rooms or facilities into fixed promises.

Visit length and who it suits

Allow about 1.5–2.5 hours for the Donghu Street main museum alone. If both the main museum and the ancient-ship exhibition inside Kaiyuan Temple are open and the transfer works for your day, allow longer. The museum suits history enthusiasts, museum-focused visitors and families doing an educational visit, while travellers with limited mobility should consider the main building's floor-to-floor route in advance.

Choose your visit

Maritime transport and the Song–Yuan port

The main museum focuses on Quanzhou's history as a maritime transport centre, including ships, port trade and the remains of different religious communities. The ancient-ship hall focuses on a Song–Yuan ship and related displays, but the specific exhibits available depend on the hall's opening status that day.

Religious stonework and ship displays

Visitors interested in religious remains from maritime exchange can combine the stone-carving galleries with the maritime-history displays. Dynamic projections, ship models, the ancient ship and Islamic-culture displays may have different access arrangements, so do not assume every item listed in an introduction will be visible on the day.

Build your day

The Donghu Street main museum only

Navigate to No. 425 Donghu Street, then arrange the floor order around the galleries open that day. If time is limited, prioritise the displays related to Song–Yuan Quanzhou, ships and religious stonework rather than trying to find the ancient-ship hall inside the same building.

The main museum and nearby museums do not share reservations, entrances or exhibitions. If a guided tour or special exhibition is available, join it after confirming the arrangement at the museum rather than waiting for an unconfirmed time and disrupting your return journey.

Combining the main museum and the ancient-ship hall

Only put the two locations on the same day after confirming that both are open. Visit the Donghu Street main museum first, then travel separately to Kaiyuan Temple. The ancient-ship hall is an exhibition inside the temple grounds, so you must also follow the temple's opening hours and etiquette when entering.

If the ancient-ship hall is closed, continue with the main museum instead of assuming that the main museum is also inaccessible. Treat the transfer between the two locations as cross-district transport, not an internal walk between galleries.

Get there

Reaching the two locations

Use No. 425 Donghu Street for the main museum. A taxi from outside the old city is usually the simplest option, while the day's bus routes should be checked before setting out. The Xiaobai sightseeing vehicle generally does not stop directly at the museum entrance, so a transfer may be needed. For the ancient-ship hall, navigate to the relevant entrance inside Kaiyuan Temple rather than to the Donghu Street museum.

Driving, cycling and public-transport connections depend on the day's roads and venue arrangements. If you plan to visit Kaiyuan Temple or West Street on the same day, decide which location will be your final stop before arranging the return journey.

Know before you go

Booking, security and movement inside

Confirm separately whether the main museum and the ancient-ship hall require reservations, whether they are open that day and where visitors enter. Follow the on-site security rules for drinks, bags and camera equipment. If someone in your group uses a stroller or has limited mobility, ask first about the ground-floor route and available facilities.

Galleries, guided tours and interactive projects may follow date-specific schedules. Complete the exhibitions you know are open before adding optional stamp collections, café stops or guided activities.

The boundary with Kaiyuan Temple

The ancient-ship hall inside Kaiyuan Temple is a separate exhibition within the temple grounds. Do not apply the main museum's reservation system, closure day or transport instructions to it. Visitors to the ship hall must also follow the temple's clothing, photography and conduct rules.
