Plan at a glance
An open street district
West Street is a public street and a network of nearby lanes in Quanzhou's old city. The main street and most lanes are free to enter and do not require one district-wide reservation. The street itself has no single opening schedule that applies to every shop, café, rooftop terrace, temple or performance venue; each operator sets its own hours, prices and queues.
Starting around the Bell Tower or Kaiyuan Temple, allow about 2–3 hours for a short walk. Add the lanes, a rooftop stop and a meal for a half-day visit. Stone paving, midday heat and holiday crowds can slow the walk considerably.

The main street and arcades
West Street suits first-time visitors who enjoy historic buildings, local snacks and a slower walk. The Minnan red-brick buildings, arcades and old shops are best taken in as you move along, while the twin pagodas at nearby Kaiyuan Temple provide the clearest architectural landmark.
Lanes, rooftops and evening walking
When you want a quieter route, turn into nearby lanes such as Xiangfeng Lane and Jinyu Lane to see residences and older shops. Some rooftop terraces require a purchase or a queue. Whether a terrace has space or a clear pagoda view must be checked on the day, so do not present one viewpoint as a guaranteed service.
Build your day
The 2–3-hour short route
Start at the Bell Tower and walk along the main section of West Street. Use Kaiyuan Temple as a middle stop, then continue to Xiangfeng Lane for views that place the street and pagodas together before returning to the main street or an outer transport point. The route is compact enough for a half-day visit; you do not need to cover every lane.
A half-day route
For a first full visit, begin at Kaiyuan Temple, continue through West Street and the Bell Tower, then turn into lanes such as Jinyu Lane. Finish at a café or restaurant whose opening and queue arrangements you have confirmed. Rooftop terraces, lanes and the main street can all have queues at the same time, so treat the rooftop stop as optional rather than letting it control the whole route.
An evening route
After the lights come on, walk along the main street and, if it is open, continue to Tonghuai Guanyue Temple or a nearby dining area. Night lighting, stage activities and shop hours vary by date. Keep time for the return journey and do not treat a fixed “night atmosphere” as a guaranteed result.
Get there
Reaching West Street and moving through the old city
From Quanzhou Railway Station to the West Street core, a taxi or bus usually takes about 10–20 minutes, depending on the drop-off point and road conditions. Within the old city, Xiaobai costs about CNY 2 per person as a reference, and you can also walk or use a shared bicycle around the outer areas.
The old-city roads are narrow and often congested during holidays, so do not drive into the main street. Park outside the core and continue on foot or by Xiaobai instead of circling the old city in search of a space.
Know before you go
Crowds, paving and weather
There is a lot of stone paving, so wear shoes suitable for a long walk and with good grip. Summer midday sun is strong; around 08:00 or after 17:30 is more comfortable for a slow walk, although holidays can still be crowded.
Prices, portions and queues vary widely among snack shops and creative stores along the main street. Check the price before ordering. Rooftop cafés may have a minimum spend or a waiting list, so free access and no minimum spend are not general rules.
Relationship with nearby sites
Kaiyuan Temple, Guanyue Temple and other old-city sites are managed separately. West Street being open throughout the day does not mean that they are open throughout the day. Check the entry rules for the specific performance, temple or indoor venue you plan to visit.
