Location, layout and entry points
Windmill Island is in the Shigongliao area of the wider Red Bay Tourist Area. Use Shigongliao Village or Shallow Water Bay as your navigation point. The Sea Highway, Shallow Water Bay, Furi Bay, the Sea Castle and Hou'ao Glass Sea are far apart, so an island loop is more practical than treating them as one walkable attraction.
Tickets, opening and parking
The island is free to enter and does not require a reservation. Some car parks charge a fee, including Shallow Water Bay at about CNY 20 per vehicle. The island can be visited throughout the day, but 15:00–19:00 is the most useful period for avoiding harsh sun and leaving time for sunset.
Best travel style
Windmill Island is especially suitable for driving, cycling and photography, as well as family half-days based around Shallow Water Bay. If you rely on buses, reduce the number of stops and focus on the Sea Highway plus one beach, as local transport will limit how much you can cover.

One-day coastal route
Start on the Sea Highway, then continue to Shallow Water Bay, Furi Bay and the Sea Castle before staying for sunset. Around six hours is enough for these core stops, but remove one or two if traffic or parking is slow.
Two-day combined route
On day one, circle the island and visit Shallow Water Bay and Furi Bay. On day two, add the Sea Castle, Hou'ao Glass Sea, Red Bay’s main beach and Erma Road night market. Splitting the route avoids repeated long transfers in one day.
Family and easy-going route
For families, focus on Shallow Water Bay, Windmill Island’s grass area and Shigongliao Village. The beach is relatively gentle and has lifeguards, while the grass area works for a short picnic; there is no need to take children to less equipped areas such as Hou'ao Glass Sea for photos.

Sea Highway: complete the island’s main travel section first
The Sea Highway is about 8 km long and follows an S-shaped route across the water, making it the island’s main driving corridor and one of the best places to see contrasting sea colours. Use designated or safe parking points for short stops rather than pulling over on popular roadside photo spots without parking.
Shallow Water Bay and Furi Bay: separate beach time from rest time
Use Shallow Water Bay for the beach, boardwalk and family paddling. Use Furi Bay for coffee, the camping-area surroundings and a later-afternoon stop. If the weather is cloudy or windy and Shallow Water Bay looks murky, shift time to Furi Bay or another coastal stop.
Sea Castle and Hou'ao Glass Sea: leave them for later
The Sea Castle is best visited later in the afternoon, when softer light gives more definition to the concrete ruins, rocks and waves. Hou'ao Glass Sea is quieter and clear, but facilities are limited; only enter in stable weather, at a suitable tide and with adequate preparation.

Driving to the island
Navigate to “Shigongliao Windmill Island” or “Shallow Water Bay”; from the Pearl River Delta, allow around two to three hours. Holiday traffic into the island can be heavy, so decide on parking, return timing and sunset location before setting out.
High-speed rail, then a rental
After arriving at Shanwei Railway Station, travel to the Red Bay visitor area to rent a car or electric scooter. Scooters cost around CNY 50 per day. Island roads include slopes and can drain batteries quickly, so collect a fully charged vehicle, helmet and clear information about permitted roads.
Bus connections
Take Bus 116 from Shanwei Railway Station to Zhelang Service Centre, then use local transport into the island. Services are limited and stops are spread out, so this option is best for a short route centred on the Sea Highway and one beach rather than a full island circuit.
Know before you go
Holiday congestion
May Day, National Day and other holiday periods can bring severe congestion on the island’s one-way roads. A few kilometres may take two hours. Weekdays are better for driving; at weekends, try to enter before 10:00 or after 15:00.
Sea conditions and sun exposure
Shallow Water Bay is close to a river mouth, so the water can look yellow or cloudy on windy or overcast days. The island is exposed to strong sun and wind, so bring sun protection, a hat and water, and do not enter rough water or wet rocks simply for photos.
Parking and electric scooters
Popular photo stops do not always have formal parking, and illegal roadside parking can lead to fines. Shallow Water Bay, Furi Bay and the Sea Castle car parks are safer options. Check scooter range before leaving, and wear non-slip shoes rather than ordinary sandals on wet rock areas.
