Plan at a glance
Open district and visit scope
Calligrapher's Hometown is at the southern foot of Jishan in Yuecheng District, Shaoxing, with No. 117 Shengli East Road as the usual address. The district has no fixed perimeter or unified ticket checkpoint. You can enter through the southern Hanmo Chun memorial archway, the East Gate or the Cai Yuanpei Square area. It is open all day and suits a quick 1-1.5-hour walk; first-time visitors can allow 2-3 hours.
The Wang Xizhi Exhibition Hall, Cai Yuanpei Former Residence and other internal venues have their own opening arrangements, usually 8:30-17:00. They are usually closed on Mondays, and visitors need to scan an ID card to enter. The hours of exhibition halls, coffee shops and restaurants do not follow the district's all-day access, so plan exhibition visits during the daytime.
Free district and optional activities
Walking through the district is free, with no unified gate control during the day. Wupeng boats, internal exhibition halls and individual commercial venues operate separately. Visitors can simply follow the bridges, waterways, Ink Pond and lanes, or add an exhibition hall or separately paid water activity.

Calligraphy traces and water-town lanes
Calligrapher's Hometown suits visitors interested in Wang Xizhi's calligraphy, old-city lanes in Jiangnan and unhurried walking. Tishan Bridge, Jifang Bridge, Ink Pond, Jiezhu Temple and Wenbi Pagoda are the main sights, with bridges, water, calligraphy inscriptions and old houses concentrated in a walkable district.
Tishan Bridge works well with the story of Wang Xizhi writing on a fan, while Jifang Bridge offers views of the waterway and Wenbi Pagoda. Ink Pond is a good place to stop and observe the water and calligraphy wall. Internal exhibition halls are separate attractions, with their own opening hours and ID checks.
Water activities and photography
Photographers can come early to walk the stone paths, bridges and Ink Pond before crowds build after weekend mornings. A Wupeng boat is a separate water activity; confirm its price, pier and same-day operation on-site. Free walking through the district does not include a boat ticket.
The district also suits family educational visits and traditional-style photography, but its stone paving, narrow lanes and bridge-side spaces require a slower pace. Flat shoes are more useful than bringing elaborate photography equipment.
Build your day
1-1.5-hour quick route
With limited time, enter through the South Gate and pass Tishan Bridge, Jifang Bridge, Ink Pond and the old-bookshop area in the lanes before walking toward the northern exit. Focus on bridges, waterways and calligraphy walls, without forcing an exhibition hall or Wupeng boat into the route.
2-3-hour complete walk
First-time visitors can start at Cai Yuanpei Square, pass Bifei Lane and Cai Yuanpei Former Residence, then continue along Jishan Street, Ink Pond, Jiezhu Temple, Duopo Lane, Xianning Bridge, Jifang Bridge and Tishan Bridge. Depending on opening hours, add the Wang Xizhi Exhibition Hall before leaving near Tanhua Bridge. If a hall is closed, continue walking through the district rather than turning back for one venue.
Early-morning quiet route
Photographers can enter around 7:00, start at Jifang Bridge and the calligraphy wall, then continue to Ink Pond and the old-bookshop area. Decide later whether to climb Wenbi Pagoda or visit an exhibition hall once it opens. The district can be walked freely early in the morning, but exhibitions are not yet open, so plan photography and gallery visits separately.
Get there
Metro, buses and taxis
Take Shaoxing Metro Line 1 to City Square Station, leave through Exit B and walk about 10-15 minutes. Buses 52, 23 and 1 stop at Chengbeiqiao Station, followed by a walk of about 10 minutes. When taking a taxi, use Calligrapher's Hometown South Gate or Tishan Bridge as the destination to reach the core district directly.
The entrances are spread out, so you can begin at the South Gate, East Gate or Cai Yuanpei Square. If you plan to visit a particular hall, confirm its direction first and then choose the most suitable entrance.
Driving and parking
Roads in the old city are narrow and parking is inconvenient. Consider City Square Car Park or Jishan Park Car Park, then walk to the district entrance. The narrow lanes are not suitable for driving around in search of a temporary space.
Know before you go
Venue hours and crowds
The district is open all day, while internal exhibition halls usually operate 8:30-17:00 and are usually closed on Mondays. Crowds increase after 10:00 on weekends and public holidays, and places such as Jifang Bridge may require a queue for photographs. For emptier street views, do the main walk around 8:00.
Surfaces, payments and food
The route is mostly stone paving and narrow lanes. Wear flat, non-slip shoes and leave room for residents and cyclists. Street shops have their own hours and payment methods. Free access to the district does not make every shop, gallery or restaurant free or continuously open; confirm the price before buying snacks or souvenirs.
Internal exhibition halls, Wupeng boats, food and commercial activities are charged or arranged separately. Put water, rest and a proper meal outside the district or at a suitable point along the route to keep control of the schedule, rather than disrupting the walk while waiting for one activity.
