Plan at a glance
Location, scope and entrances
Lu Xun Native Place Scenic Area is along Lu Xun Middle Road in Yuecheng District, Shaoxing. The East Gate is near the Lu Xun cigarette-lighting wall and visitor center, while the West Gate is near the exit of Lu Xun's Former Residence and the footbridge. The main stops are Lu Xun's Ancestral Home, Lu Xun's Former Residence, Baicao Garden and the Lu Xun Memorial Hall. Sanwei Study Hall is part of the same scenic-area system, but it does not share the same entrance as Baicao Garden.
The East Gate works well for a sequential visit through the core sights, while the West Gate is more useful as an exit after the visit. Allow about 3 hours for a first visit. If you only want the textbook-related sights, the visit can be shortened to about 1.5 hours; add more time if you also want the memorial hall and nearby water-town areas.
Reservations, admission and opening hours
Admission is free, but real-name reservations must be made at least one day in advance through the Shaoxing Cultural Tourism Group or Shaoxing Lu Xun Memorial Hall WeChat accounts. Scan the ID card used for the reservation at entry. On Mondays, the opening hours are 8:30-17:00, with reservations closing at 16:30. From Tuesday to Sunday, hours are 8:30-21:00, with reservations closing at 20:00; holiday hours may be extended. The site closes at night on Mondays. On other days, evening visits are possible, but some areas may close earlier for safety.

Textbook scenes and Lu Xun's former residence
Baicao Garden, Sanwei Study Hall and Lu Xun's Former Residence suit first-time visitors to Shaoxing and anyone interested in Lu Xun's life and the scenes described in school texts. Baicao Garden retains features such as vegetable beds, low walls, old trees and the earth wall base. Lu Xun's Former Residence shows living spaces including the bedroom and kitchen, while the Lu Xun Memorial Hall adds biographical information and related exhibitions.
Sanwei Study Hall's private-school classroom and the desk marked with the character "zao" are a separate stop; the desk is a replica. There are many cultural-product shops inside the area, but they are not the main reason to visit. If time is limited, prioritize the former residence, Baicao Garden, Sanwei Study Hall and the memorial hall.
Water lanes and the memorial hall
The area around the scenic site remains part of Shaoxing's old water-town setting, so Lu Xun Native Place can be paired with nearby Shen Garden, Cangqiao Straight Street or Calligrapher's Hometown as separate visits. Wupeng boats, water activities and nearby venues have their own arrangements; a Lu Xun Native Place reservation does not automatically cover them.
The Lu Xun Memorial Hall suits visitors who want more background on Lu Xun's life, literary context and local Shaoxing life. If you want to collect stamps or examine the exhibitions carefully, place the memorial hall later in the route and allow time for queues and gallery stops.
Build your day
East Gate in, West Gate out
For a 1.5-hour visit focused on the textbook scenes, enter through the East Gate, see the cigarette-lighting wall, then continue to Sanwei Study Hall and Lu Xun's Ancestral Home. Visit Lu Xun's Former Residence and Baicao Garden afterward, then leave toward the West Gate. After entering through the East Gate, follow the signs to the core sights; the area with many cultural-product shops does not need to be the starting point.
For a first full visit, allow about 3 hours. Enter through the East Gate and visit the cigarette-lighting wall, Sanwei Study Hall, Lu Xun's Ancestral Home, Lu Xun's Former Residence and Baicao Garden in sequence. Continue to Zhujia Garden and the Lu Xun Memorial Hall, then leave toward the footbridge. Sanwei Study Hall and Baicao Garden have different entrances, so follow the on-site signs across the street or waterways rather than looking for an unofficial shortcut.
Evening and nearby plans
If you want an evening visit, complete Lu Xun's Former Residence, Baicao Garden and the memorial hall during the day, then decide whether to continue around the scenic area for water-town night views. Shen Garden is very close to Lu Xun Native Place, but it has its own daytime ticket and night programme. Buy its ticket separately and confirm its entry time separately.
Short walks can take much longer on weekends and public holidays because of crowds. Allocate time according to actual conditions when combining Lu Xun Native Place, Sanwei Study Hall, Shen Garden and another water-town district. If you cannot finish everything, keep the core route for which you already have a reservation.
Get there
High-speed rail, metro and buses
If arriving by high-speed rail from outside Shaoxing, Shaoxing Railway Station is more convenient for the city center. You can also arrive at Shaoxing North Railway Station and change to Metro Line 1 for Lu Xun Native Place Station. Leave through Exit B and walk about 300 metres to the scenic-area area.
Buses also stop at Lu Xun Native Place Station. After arriving, first confirm whether you need the East Gate or the independent Sanwei Study Hall checkpoint, then follow the signs on foot. Do not navigate only by the name of a sub-site, or you may arrive at the wrong entrance.
Driving and parking
If driving, consider the underground garage at Shaoxing Second Hospital, about 270 metres from the East Gate, or the multi-storey garage at Shaoxing Grand Theatre. Surface parking near the scenic-area entrance is tight on weekends and public holidays, so park and walk in rather than searching for a temporary space at the gate.
Know before you go
Crowds, surfaces and strollers
Tour groups are common on weekends and public holidays. To reduce queues, reserve an early 8:30 entry slot. Much of the area has stone paving, raised thresholds, narrow doors and steps, so wear flat shoes. Some sections require a stroller to be carried; when travelling with children, keep luggage to a minimum.
After 17:00, some rockeries and waterside areas may close for safety. Follow the on-site management instructions around the water, on stone paths and in crowded areas. If a section is crowded or closed, switch directly to the former residence, memorial hall or other core sights that remain open.
Reservations and spending
The real-name reservation and the matching ID card are required for entry, so arrange them before reaching the gate. Cultural-product and drinks shops are common inside the area, with different prices and tastes; complete the main route first and spend according to your needs.
The free Lu Xun Native Place reservation only covers entry to the scenic-area system. Wupeng boats, nearby venues, food and Shen Garden's daytime or nighttime programmes must be confirmed separately. Nearby locations do not therefore share one ticket.
