Palaces and living quarters on the central route
Chongzheng Hall (崇政殿) was the main hall where Hong Taiji handled state affairs, and Phoenix Tower (凤凰楼) was once one of the highest structures in Shengjing.
Qingning Palace (清宁宫) served as the imperial couple's living quarters. Its “wanzi kang” (万字炕), a heated platform running along three walls, reflects Manchu domestic life.
Audience halls on the eastern route
The Ten Princes' Pavilions (十王亭) in front of Dazheng Hall (大政殿) are the eastern route's main sights. Dazheng Hall has a Mongolian-yurt-like form, and the arrangement of halls and pavilions was used for deliberations among the Eight Banners princes. This spacious group of buildings differs from the central palaces and helps explain Manchu court assemblies and ceremonies.
The library building on the western route
The western route's main building is Wensu Pavilion (文溯阁), which once housed the Siku Quanshu (四库全书), or Complete Library of the Four Treasuries. Its black roof tiles have green glazed trim, unlike the roofs of the other palace buildings. Leave time to look closely if library history or architectural details interest you.

Build your day
From the central route to the west
Enter through Daqingmen. First visit Chongzheng Hall, Phoenix Tower and Qingning Palace, then continue east to Dazheng Hall and the Ten Princes' Pavilions, and finish at Wensu Pavilion on the western route. Allow about 2 hours for this sequence through the former administrative, deliberative and library areas. After the visit, follow the museum signs to the exit and walk to Zhongjie or Huaiyuanmen Station.
If you have less time
Allow at least 2 hours if you want to see the central, eastern and western routes, and leave enough time before closing. For a shorter visit, prioritize major buildings such as Chongzheng Hall and Dazheng Hall, then choose a living-quarter building or Wensu Pavilion based on your interests.
Get there
Metro and bus
Take Metro Line 1 to Zhongjie (中街) or Huaiyuanmen (怀远门) Station, then walk about 5–10 minutes to Daqingmen. Huanlu (环路) and Bus 228 stop at “沈阳方城·故宫西华门站” (“Shenyang Fangcheng · Imperial Palace Xihua Gate Station”); walk from there to Daqingmen.
Parking
Parking near the palace is limited. The Dadong Road parking lot is one option, with a reference rate of about RMB 3 per hour.
Know before you go
Summer crowds and tour guides
Tour groups are common in the morning during summer. If you want to see all three routes, try to enter earlier in the day. The quality of commentary from outside guides and third-party apps varies; consider a museum guide or its official audio guide. Buy tickets through official channels or authorized platforms.
Food and nearby sights
Wanghouyuan Dumplings (王厚元饺子, Imperial Palace branch) is about 181 meters away, Xiao Dongge Barbecue (小董哥烤串, Imperial Palace branch) about 180 meters, and Diguo Genju Iron-Pot Stew (地锅根据地锅炖) about 327 meters. Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence is also within walking distance, so you can visit both on the same day. If you buy the three-venue ticket, plan around each museum's opening hours.
