Temple buildings and poetry steles
Hanshan Temple suits visitors interested in Buddhist temple spaces, Tang poetry and views of the Grand Canal. The Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Hanshi Hall, Bell Tower and Puming Pagoda each offer a different stop, while the stele corridor, the yellow wall at the West Gate and the canal-and-bridge view from the temple corridors add cultural and photographic interest.
Who it suits
Visitors looking for a quiet temple visit can come at opening time, while those interested in local culture can include the stele corridor, Arhat Hall and Bell Tower. Hanshan Temple and the neighbouring Fengqiao Scenic Area serve different purposes: the temple requires admission, while Fengqiao focuses on free canals, bridges and historic riverfront space, so allow time for each separately.
Build your day
A 1-hour route
Enter through the West Gate and continue through the Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Bell Tower, Hanshi Hall and Puming Pagoda before leaving through the East Gate. This route stays close to the central temple buildings and works well before a walk through Fengqiao Scenic Area.
A 2-hour route
From the West Gate, visit the Hall of Heavenly Kings and stele corridor, then Arhat Hall, Mahavira Hall, Hanshi Hall, Bell Tower and Puming Pagoda before finishing at the rear koi pond and leaving through the East Gate. If you want to ring the bell or join commentary, place that time in the middle of the route rather than cutting short the final walk to the exit.
Get there
Metro, shuttle and buses
Take Metro Line 1 to Xihuan Road Station (西环路), Exit 4, cross the road and transfer to Community Bus 9002 or the Hanshan Temple shuttle to the area near the ticket office. Bus routes 33, 44, 301 and Tour 3 stop at Heshanqiao or Hanshan Temple, followed by a walk.
Driving
Traffic around Hanshan Temple can be heavy during holidays, and parking is limited. If you must drive, try Heshan Road RT-Mart parking lot and walk about 10 minutes; regular buses or a ride-hailing car are more practical when combining the temple with Fengqiao.
Know before you go
Entry and spending
Admission and bell-ringing experiences are separate, and you do not need to accept unsolicited incense, transport or ticket services outside the temple. Food inside and outside the temple follows separate prices and hours; decide whether to queue for vegetarian noodles based on the conditions that day, and note that the temple ticket does not include food or other experience packages.
Connecting with Fengqiao
Hanshan Temple normally stops admitting visitors at 16:30 and closes at 17:00. If you also want Fengqiao's evening scenery, check your temple timing first, then transfer on foot from the East Gate or the neighbouring area; Fengqiao may stay open later, but its lighting, shops and riverfront services also reduce at night.
