Navigation, scope and access
Shantang Street is about 3,600 metres long and free to enter without a reservation. For the core entrance, search for “Seven Mile Shantang Scenic Area” and enter by Xinmin Bridge beside Exit 3 of Shantang Street Station on Metro Line 2; searching only “Shantang Street” may send you toward the Tiger Hill area instead.
Street hours and separate services
The full street is best visited in sections: a short route takes about 1.5 hours, while adding evening views and nearby stops takes 2–3 hours. Shops often operate around 09:00–21:30, with lights coming on around 19:00 in summer and 17:30 in winter, but individual shops, teahouses, boats and performances keep separate schedules.

River, bridges and night scenery
Xinmin Bridge gives a high view of the canal bend, Tonggui Bridge is the main place to see the stone arch, red lanterns and reflections, and Baijuyi Wharf is the point for rowing boats. At dusk, a riverside teahouse and Pingtan performance offer a slower way to experience the district; daylight and evening show different sides of the same street.
Who it suits
Shantang Street suits visitors interested in water-town scenery, night views, Pingtan and riverside walking, especially if you can stay from afternoon into evening. The street has a historic water connection with Tiger Hill, but it is a separate attraction with its own entrances, tickets and boat arrangements.
Build your day
A 1.5-hour route
Enter near Xinmin Bridge, look over the canal, then walk along the water to Tonggui Bridge, the historic stage and Baijuyi Wharf before returning by the route or exit available that day. This route covers the main bridges and boat wharf without requiring a walk along the full 3,600-metre street.
A 2–3 hour route
Enter from Xinmin Bridge in the afternoon, continue through Tonggui Bridge, the historic stage and Xizhongshi, then visit Xiyuan Temple if your energy allows and return to the eastern section for the lights. If you choose a boat, ask about the day's departures, capacity and price at Baijuyi Wharf or another official ticket point; roadside package prices need separate checking and do not define the day's standard fare or service.
Get there
Metro and entrance
Exit 3 at Shantang Street Station on Metro Line 2 leads directly to Xinmin Bridge and the core area. When western old-city traffic is heavy, the metro makes arrival time easier to control; if you continue to Lingering Garden or Xiyuan Temple, navigate again to the specific destination.
Driving and walking
Driving to the street and searching for a temporary space is not recommended during holidays. If you must drive, confirm a public parking lot first and walk in; because the district is long, choose your return transport based on where you finish rather than assuming you will return to the starting bridge.
Know before you go
Quiet periods and lights
Arriving on a weekday or before 17:00 on a weekend makes it easier to see the daytime street before planning the evening lights. Crowds usually increase after the lights come on, and teahouses, shops and boats do not share one closing time, so leave room for waiting and the return journey.
Boats and spending
Buy boat tickets at an official wharf and confirm whether the charge is per boat or per person, the journey length and where you will return. Main-street food and snacks vary widely in price, so confirm prices before ordering or paying for photography and styling services.
