Plan at a glance
Area and two main routes
Suzhou's Taihu area covers a wide stretch of the city's southwest lakeshore, with Dongshan Peninsula and Xishan Island (Jinting Town) as the main travel areas. It cannot be reduced to one entrance, one ticket or one opening schedule. Dongshan is reached from the mainland via the Taihu Ring Road, while Xishan requires crossing Taihu Bridge; first choose a Dongshan day route, a Xishan day route or a two-day plan.
Visitor centre and individual attractions
The Wuzhong Taihu Tourism Area Visitor Centre is at 8 Binhu Road in Dongshan Town and is a useful starting point for regional information. Qiyuan, Luxiang Ancient Village, Zijin Nunnery, Linwu Cave, Shigong Mountain and Taihu National Wetland Park each have their own tickets, hours and reservation arrangements; travelling through the region does not include admission to these sites.

Dongshan Peninsula
Dongshan works well as a line combining lake views, gardens and villages: Qiyuan is a lakeside garden, Luxiang Ancient Village preserves old lanes and Ming-period stone archways, and Zijin Nunnery is known for its Song-period clay arhats. Daixinwan Bridge and Furongzhou are good for lake views and sunset, but they are separate from the ticketed attractions.
Xishan Island and the wetland park
Xishan Island can combine Taihu Bridge, Linwu Cave, Mingyuewan Ancient Village and Shigong Mountain. Linwu Cave is damp underfoot and cooler in summer, but you still need shoes with good grip. Visitors who want to see the panda hall and free-ranging sika deer can choose Taihu National Wetland Park separately; it is in its own area with its own ticket and opening hours.
Build your day
A Dongshan day route
Enter from the Visitor Centre or the Dongshan side, visit Qiyuan in the morning, then go to Luxiang Ancient Village in the afternoon. Depending on the weather and return time, finish at Daixinwan Bridge or Furongzhou for sunset. Qiyuan usually opens 08:00–16:30, with last entry at 16:00, so the closing time of the ticketed site should come before lakeside walking.
A Xishan day route and a two-day plan
For one day on Xishan, follow Taihu Bridge, Linwu Cave, Mingyuewan Ancient Village or Shigong Mountain, then return from the island; Linwu Cave usually opens 08:00–16:30, and its damp paths require extra walking time. If you want both islands, spend the first day on the Dongshan history-and-garden route and the second day crossing Taihu Bridge to Xishan; the two peninsulas should not be compressed into one day.
Get there
Public transport
For Dongshan, take Metro Line 5 to Taihu Xiangshan Station, transfer to Bus 581 to Dongshan Terminal, and then change to a local bus for the individual attractions; the full journey may take about 1.5–2 hours. For Xishan, take Express Line 10 from Suzhou Railway Station, then transfer to the peak-hour and regular branches of Bus 694 for Jinting Government or Linwu Cave; include possible waiting time in the plan.
Driving and island return
Driving is the easiest way to connect several scattered attractions, using the Huchang Expressway, Taihu Ring Road and Taihu Bridge to reach the specific destination. During holidays such as Labour Day, the main roads on Dongshan and Xishan and Taihu Bridge can be congested, so aim to enter before 09:00. Taxis can be difficult to find on the islands, so non-drivers should arrange buses, a hired car or the return vehicle in advance.
Know before you go
Tickets and reservations
The usual reference prices are CNY 45 for Qiyuan, CNY 65 for Luxiang Ancient Village, CNY 30 for Zijin Nunnery, CNY 50 for Linwu Cave and CNY 60 for Taihu National Wetland Park. Opening hours, combination tickets and reservation channels are separate for each site; confirm through Suzhou Gardens Tourism or the individual attraction's account before travelling, because there is no regional ticket that covers them all.
Parking, weather and food
Dongshan and Xishan can have heavy inbound and outbound traffic during holidays, and parking methods and charges at places such as Mingyuewan can vary. Confirm whether lake-fresh food and farmhouse dishes are priced by portion or weight before ordering. Rain, sun, mosquitoes and slippery cave floors can all change the route, so leave extra time for weather and the return journey.
