Plan at a glance
Prepare for a backcountry hike
Gongyu Scenic Area is in Gongyu Village, Tianshi Town, Xianju County, Taizhou. The village has no road access for ordinary cars, so hikers usually start near Qiankeng Village or Youlingkeng. This is a mountain hiking area, not a village viewpoint a few minutes from the car. Do not estimate it like a flat, managed attraction.
The trailhead, village, terraces, Gongyu Back, and descent loop involve different levels of effort. A short route can reach Gongyu Village and return. Gongyu Back, a full loop, or camping requires more time, equipment, and room for weather changes.
How much time to allow
Allow half a day to hike from a trailhead to Gongyu Village and return. A Gongyu Back route or full loop needs most of a day. Two-day camping, night activities, sunrise plans, and a creek route all depend on weather, fitness, supplies, local land management, and trail conditions. They are not default options.
Mountain paths have no dependable lighting at night. Complete the main hike in daylight and leave time to descend. Do not continue on an unfamiliar trail after dark to reach a viewpoint.

Gongyu Village and the terraces
Gongyu Village, Upper Ping, Lower Ping, and the terraces are the main areas for a shorter hike. The route passes through bamboo, mountain paths, village lanes, and farmland. It suits visitors who enjoy rural scenery, traditional buildings, and a longer outdoor walk.
The color of the terraces, flowers, water level, and weather change through the year. Do not expect one particular scene on every visit. Supplies in the village are limited, so carry enough water and simple food even on a short route.
Gongyu Back and the high views
Gongyu Back offers higher views of the village, terraces, and surrounding peaks. The upper route may include steep slopes, exposed ground, and rope-assisted sections. Visitors without mountain experience, suitable equipment, or confidence with heights should stop at Gongyu Village or choose a lower route.
Who should visit
Gongyu suits hikers with outdoor experience who can use an offline map and adjust the route for the weather. Children, inexperienced walkers, visitors with poor balance, and anyone hiking during thunderstorms should stay away from steep, wet, poorly marked, or technically demanding upper sections.
Build your day
The Gongyu Village short route
Start from the Qiankeng or Youlingkeng trailhead. Follow the bamboo and mountain path to Gongyu Village, stop around Upper Ping, Lower Ping, and the terraces, then return along the planned route. Before setting off, confirm the parking point, return time, and available supplies. Even the short route needs water and food.
This suits first-time visitors, limited schedules, and anyone who mainly wants the village and terraces. If your energy drops, weather worsens, or the return time becomes tight, turn back from Gongyu Village instead of continuing toward Gongyu Back.
The Gongyu Back loop
Experienced hikers can continue from the village toward Gongyu Back and choose the descent according to the open route and safety conditions. Before starting, check the climb, ground, weather, phone coverage, and the ability of everyone in the group. Use an offline map and keep the group together.
At a steep slope, rope section, wet rock, or unclear trail, turn back if you cannot confirm the route is safe. A loop may not be completed as planned. Keep enough energy and daylight for the return.
Camping and two-day plans
Camping, stargazing, sunrise, and a creek route require separate confirmation of weather, campsite management, water, waste disposal, and the return route. Without clear permission or suitable equipment, do not camp beside terraces, on residents' land, in a river valley, or at an unconfirmed site.
A two-day plan needs a backup descent day. During the rainy season, high water, thunderstorms, or very slippery paths, drop the camping and creek sections and return on the daytime village route.
Get there
From Xianju South Station
From Xianju South Station, take a taxi to the Qiankeng or Youlingkeng trailhead. Another option is to travel from Xianju Bus Station toward Hengxi Town and arrange the remaining vehicle transfer, but check the service and connection on the day. Do not treat the public transport connection as a fixed service.
Tell the driver whether you need Qiankeng Village or Youlingkeng. Ordinary vehicles do not drive to Gongyu Village. The place where the car can stop is still some walking distance from the trail into the mountains.
Driving and parking
Drive to a clearly marked parking area near Qiankeng Village or Youlingkeng and note the car location and descent direction. The two trailheads have different routes and parking arrangements. Do not switch between them without making a new vehicle plan.
Drive the mountain roads in daylight and slow down after rain, in fog, or on wet roads. Do not use a resident road, terrace path, or non-parking open space as an improvised parking area.
Prepare before hiking
Bring an offline map, enough water, trail food, rain protection, a warm layer, a headlamp, and proper hiking shoes. Decide whether trekking poles or gloves are needed for your route. Phone coverage may disappear, so at least one person in the group should know the full route and return plan.
Know before you go
Hiking difficulty and safety
Steep slopes, wet ground, rope-assisted sections, and unmarked terrain are not suitable for inexperienced visitors. Avoid near-vertical climbing sections and do not cross streams in rainy conditions. Children should not enter upper sections that require technical movement.
Weather, water, and phone coverage
Heavy rain, lightning, rising streams, fog, and poor visibility can change the safety of a route. Carry water and food from the trailhead and download an offline map. When there is no signal, stay on the confirmed route rather than searching for a “closer” exit.
Village and mountain etiquette
Gongyu is a living village, and terraces and mountain areas may be used by local residents. Keep noise down, stay out of private homes and closed areas, and take all rubbish with you. Camping, photography, water use, and fires must follow local management rules.
