How to Visit
1

Enter from the Shaanxi side

Hukou Waterfall has entrances on both the Shaanxi and Shanxi sides. From Yan'an, visitors usually use the Shaanxi Yichuan side.

Tip:This side works well for seeing the Yellow River narrow and rush into the main waterfall channel, and it fits better with a Yan'an suburban route.
2

Buy both the entrance ticket and shuttle ticket in advance

On the Shaanxi side, the entrance ticket and scenic shuttle are usually handled separately, and real-name booking plus ID checks are important.

Tip:Before you go, confirm the same-day price, shuttle arrangement, and entry time through the official or a major ticketing platform instead of planning only from old guide prices.
3

Leave enough time for the road, not only the waterfall

The waterfall itself usually takes about 1.5-3 hours, but the drive from central Yan'an is long enough to shape the whole day. Self-driving, hiring a car, or joining a day tour is more reliable than depending on last-minute public transport.

Tip:If you also plan Huangdi Mausoleum or another suburban stop, keep the schedule loose.
4

Put safety and mist protection before photos

When the water volume is high, mist can be heavy and the viewing areas can become slippery.

Tip:Wear shoes with grip, protect your phone and camera from spray, and do not move close to railings or unopened areas just for photos.
Highlights
  • The Shaanxi side gives a strong view of the Yellow River narrowing and dropping into Hukou.
  • Spring flood season, summer-autumn high-water periods, and winter ice formations all feel different.
  • On sunny mornings, mist and rainbow effects are more likely.
  • The waterfall and loess-plateau canyon scenery feel completely different from Yan'an's city former sites.
  • It is one of the strongest natural-scenery day trips from Yan'an.
Insider Tips

Water volume and viewing quality change with season, rainfall, and upstream conditions.

High-water periods look more powerful, but mist, slippery ground, and crowds also increase.

Food options inside the scenic area are limited, so bring water and simple snacks.

If you are going from central Yan'an and back in one day, start early.

Do not mix up Shaanxi-side and Shanxi-side tickets, entrances, or transport routes.
