How to Visit
1

Reserve ahead and go earlier in the day

Yan'an Revolutionary Memorial Hall is free, but real-name reservation is required. Plan it for the morning or early afternoon, and do not arrive close to last entry.

Tip:Overseas visitors should leave time for on-site help if passport-based reservation is not smooth.
2

Use the square and entrance hall for context

Start with the square, the Mao Zedong statue, and the entrance hall before entering the main exhibition.

Tip:Do not treat the exterior as the whole visit; the value of the memorial hall is in the full historical display.
3

Follow the main exhibition in order

The main exhibition explains the thirteen years when the CPC Central Committee was based in Yan'an. Allow 2-3 hours if you want to understand the photos, documents, objects, sculptures, and recreated scenes.

Tip:With less than one hour, the visit will feel rushed and disconnected.
4

Use a guide or audio support if needed

If you are not familiar with modern Chinese history, consider a guide, an audio guide, or at least the introductory panels at the start of each section.

Tip:This helps connect the people, objects, and timeline instead of seeing only separate display cases.
5

Continue to Wangjiaping afterward

The memorial hall is very close to Wangjiaping Revolutionary Site. The memorial hall gives the wider historical narrative, while Wangjiaping gives the original-site setting, so the two work best together.

Tip:Visiting the museum first makes Wangjiaping easier to understand.
Highlights
  • This is the best starting point for understanding Yan'an's revolutionary history.
  • The main exhibition gives a structured overview of the thirteen Yan'an years.
  • The Mao Zedong statue and entrance-hall sculptures create a strong sense of arrival.
  • The documents, photos, and objects add context for Yangjialing, Zaoyuan, Wangjiaping, and other former sites.
  • Its location next to Wangjiaping makes route planning easy.
Insider Tips

Free entry does not mean walk-in entry; reservation slots and ID checks affect your timing.

Do not arrive too late in the afternoon, because the main exhibition is long.

Start with the main exhibition before spending time on temporary displays or photo spots.

Families and overseas visitors may find the visit easier after learning the basic "thirteen years in Yan'an" timeline.

If you plan to visit several former sites in one day, put the memorial hall first.
