How to Visit
1

Start with Xuanyuan Temple, then continue to the mausoleum

Visit the lower temple area first, then go up to the mausoleum area on Qiaoshan. This order makes the site easier to understand, because the temple introduces the ritual and cultural background before you reach the burial mound.

Tip:Do not rush directly uphill unless you only have a very short visit; the lower temple explains much of what the upper mausoleum represents.
2

Plan the temple and mausoleum as one visit

The main ticket normally covers both Xuanyuan Temple and the mausoleum area, so do not treat them as two separate stops. Keep your ticket and ID handy when moving between areas.

Tip:You may need your ticket or ID again when continuing between the lower and upper sections.
3

Do not underestimate the uphill section

The mausoleum area sits above the temple, and the walk can take more energy than it looks on a map.

Tip:If you are short on time, traveling with older visitors, or visiting in hot weather, consider using the sightseeing vehicle.
4

Place it on a Huangling County route

Yellow Emperor Mausoleum is in Huangling County, away from central Yan'an. It works better as a half-day or day-trip stop than as something squeezed between city-center attractions.

Tip:Check your return transport before entering if you are using Huangling South Railway Station or county buses.
Highlights
  • Yellow Emperor Mausoleum is one of China's most important sites for Yellow Emperor culture and ancestral ritual.
  • The site has a clear lower-temple and upper-mausoleum structure, which makes the visit feel more complete.
  • Key stops include the ancient cypress, Renwen Chuzu Hall, the stele corridor, the burial mound, and Hanwu Xiantai.
  • Longyu Pavilion gives a broader view over Qiaoshan and the mausoleum setting.
  • Around Qingming Festival, the site has a stronger ceremonial atmosphere, but also heavier crowds and route controls.
Insider Tips

Allow about 3 hours if you want to see both the temple and mausoleum area properly.

Keep your ticket and ID accessible until the visit is fully finished.

Leave extra time during public holidays or major ritual events.

If using Huangling South Railway Station or county transport, check your return option before entering the site.
