Zhongshan Grottoes is toward Zichang, so it is not a casual add-on to a central Yan'an day. Plan it as a focused stop, especially if you also want to pair it with Anding Ancient Town.

Start with the main cave instead of spreading your time evenly. The core value of the site is in the main grotto, where the most important carvings and details are concentrated.

The cave interior is dim, and many carvings are easy to miss without context. A guide, site explanation, or careful viewing will make the visit much more worthwhile.
Plan transport before you go
Public transport can involve transfers, and return taxis may not be as easy as in central Yan'an. Self-driving or arranging the return ride in advance is more reliable.
