How to Visit
1

Treat it as a Li River viewpoint near Xingping

Nine Horses Mountain is a riverside cliff face. The main experience is viewing its natural patterns from the river or the opposite bank, not spending a long time inside a standalone attraction.

Tip:If you are mainly coming for Nine Horses Mountain itself, 1-2 hours is usually enough. It does not need to take half a day.
2

Approach from Xingping

From Yangshuo town, go to Xingping first, then reach the viewpoint area by Li River raft, riverside path, or local transport. If you are already in Xingping Ancient Town, combine it with the 20-yuan banknote viewpoint.

Tip:Do not bring large luggage to the riverside viewpoints. Village roads, steps, and pier transfers make it inconvenient.
3

Check the pier and transfer details before buying

If you take a raft or boat, confirm whether it passes Nine Horses Mountain, which pier you use, and whether any sightseeing car or transfer is included. Some piers are much farther from the viewpoint than others.

Tip:Around piers, people may offer private cars or sightseeing cars. Check the actual walking distance before agreeing.
4

Focus on the view from across the river

The fun of Nine Horses Mountain is looking at the cliff from the right angle and slowly finding the horse-like shapes in the natural rock patterns. Softer light makes the layers easier to see and better for photos.

Tip:You do not need to force yourself to find all nine horses. This works best as a light stop within a Li River route.
Highlights
  • The natural markings on the riverside cliff make it one of the most recognizable symbolic sights along the Li River.
  • Viewing it from the river or opposite bank gives a better overall shape than standing too close.
  • It connects easily with Xingping Ancient Town and the 20-yuan banknote viewpoint.
  • Early morning, after rain, or softer light can make the cliff layers clearer.
  • For a first Yangshuo visit, it is a good example of how Li River scenery is often read through mountain shapes.
Insider Tips

Nine Horses Mountain is best as a stop along the way, not as a reason for a long dedicated transfer.

Riverside steps and dirt paths can be slippery, so wear shoes with grip.

If you take a raft, keep your phone and camera secure and do not lean out over the water for photos.

Xingping gets crowded in peak season, so starting earlier makes the route easier.

Do not confuse Nine Horses Mountain with the 20-yuan banknote viewpoint. They are close, but the viewing angles are different.
