Plan at a glance
Walk from the east end to the west end
Dongguan Street is a historic street about 1,122 metres long. Its eastern end is near Dongguan Ancient Ferry and the Dongguan gate, while the western end connects with the Guoqing Road area. For a first visit, start at the east end and walk west. You can see the gate and ferry area first, then add Geyuan Garden, Wang's Small Garden, Pishi Street, or another old-town stop along the way or after leaving.
The street is made for walking, but individual shops and side streets keep their own hours. Daytime is useful for buildings, old shops, and courtyard entrances. After dark, the street works better as a food and browsing stop followed by a short walk near Dongguan Ancient Ferry.
How long should you allow?
The main street, the gate, and one or two snacks take about 1.5–2 hours. If you add Geyuan Garden, Wang's Small Garden, or Pishi Street, plan a half day. The final time depends on how many shops, residences, and side lanes you enter.
The street itself is free to walk. Geyuan Garden, historic residences, restaurants, and commercial activities use their own prices and admission arrangements. Treat the free street walk and the paid stops along it as separate parts of the plan.

Dongguan Gate and Dongguan Ancient Ferry
The eastern end gives you the clearest sense of the street's layout. Start near the gate and ferry, then walk west along the main street. Dongguan Ancient Ferry is also a useful short stop before or after dinner if you want to see the canal edge at night.
The ferry area is also used for some ancient-canal and night-cruise arrangements, but the Dongguan Street visit here is an on-land walk. If you want to board a boat, confirm the day's boarding point, queue, and return direction separately.
Geyuan Garden and historic residences
Geyuan's South Gate opens toward Dongguan Street, so the garden works well before the street. Enter Geyuan from North Gate, complete its bamboo garden, rockeries, and residences, then leave from South Gate for food and old-town walking.
Wang's Small Garden and other historic residences suit visitors interested in Yangzhou homes, courtyards, and woodwork. Check whether a residence is open and whether it needs a separate ticket. When time is limited, stay on the main street rather than rushing in and out of several courtyards.
Food and shopping
Juxiangzhai is at 359 Dongguan Street; its Huangqiao sesame cakes cost about CNY 3 each. Cuca Danfan near 450-2 Guoqing Road is known for sweet-scented osmanthus lotus-root dumplings at about CNY 15. Jiangjiaqiao offers jiaomian or potstickers at around CNY 8 per serving. Prices and opening status can change, so check the menu when you arrive.
The street is better for trying several small portions than for planning one heavy meal around a single shop. If you have dietary restrictions, ask about fillings, soup bases, and animal fats before ordering. There are enough choices that you can adjust the food stop as you walk.
Build your day
The two-hour street route
Start at Dongguan Gate or Dongguan Ancient Ferry. Walk west through the street, looking at the gate area, old shops, historic building details, and the outside of Geyuan's South Gate. Add one or two snack stops, then leave toward Guoqing Road.
This route needs almost no backtracking and works well for a first visit or a day with another major attraction. The gate, narrow lanes, shop signs, and building details are better photo subjects than a fast walk along the centre of the street. Step aside before stopping so shop entrances and the walking line stay open.
Geyuan plus Dongguan Street
Start with Geyuan from North Gate in the morning or afternoon. Follow its North Gate–South Gate route through Wanzhu Garden, the Four Seasons Rockeries, and the southern residences. After leaving South Gate, rest near the exit and continue to Dongguan Street, choosing either the east or west direction according to your meal plan.
If you walk the street first and enter Geyuan later, keep the garden's closing time in mind. Street shops may still be open after a garden closes, but a lively street does not extend the garden's admission hours.
An evening walk
In the evening, enter from Geyuan South Gate or the Guoqing Road side. Eat or try snacks along the street, then continue east to Dongguan Ancient Ferry for a short riverside stop. Shops may adjust their hours with season and customer flow, so leave some flexibility for night activities.
If you want an independent night cruise, Dongguan Ancient Ferry is only one possible boarding area. Confirm the day's wharf, queue, and return route before deciding whether the boat comes before or after dinner.
Get there
Bus and walking
Take Tourist Route 1 or 2, or buses 25 or 52, and get off near “Dongguan Ancient Ferry” or “Dongguan Street.” From there, walk into the historic street. Public transport makes it easier to connect Dongguan Street with Geyuan, the canal riverfront, and other old-town attractions.
The old-town roads are narrow, and vehicles are not useful inside Dongguan Street. A shared bicycle or electric bike can help with short transfers between attractions, but park it in an allowed place and continue on foot inside the street and side lanes.
Driving and exit planning
Parking near Dongguan Street is limited. Narrow roads, holiday crowds, and parking charges make driving less predictable. If you must drive, decide whether your parking area is closer to the east or west end before choosing your walking direction.
The best arrangement is to park near your planned start or finish. Otherwise, you may walk from one end and then have to return through the entire street to collect the car. With children or anyone who cannot walk for long, place the street during a time when the group still has energy.
Know before you go
Free street access and separate charges
Dongguan Street is free to walk, but Geyuan, historic residences, restaurants, and shops follow their own admission or pricing rules. Check the price and opening status before entering a paid attraction or ordering inside a shop.
The main street can become crowded on weekends and around dinner time. Stand to the side when photographing, buying food, or waiting for someone, especially near shop entrances and narrow corners.
Food, menus, and spending
Juxiangzhai, Cuca Danfan, and Jiangjiaqiao offer different kinds of stops and price levels. Check the menu and portion size before ordering. Sharing several snacks works well for a group; a seated meal needs more time than a quick street snack.
The street also has souvenirs, photographs, and temporary experiences. Before paying, confirm the unit price, whether the charge is per item or per photo, and when the finished item will be ready. You can decline unsolicited offers.
Nearby plans
Dongguan Street pairs naturally with Geyuan for a half-day old-town route, or with the canal riverfront for a longer walk. For a night boat tour, check the separate Grand Canal Boat Tour arrangements for boat type, boarding, and duration. The ancient-canal route focuses on the daytime riverfront and wharf area.
Do not fill one day with too many paid gardens. Choose one garden as the main attraction and use Dongguan Street for food and walking. This is usually easier than moving between several gates on a tight schedule.
