Plan at a glance
First confirm the geography: this is Gaoyou, not central Yangzhou
Ancient Yuchengyi is at 13 Guanyi Road outside the South Gate in Gaoyou City. Gaoyou is administered as part of Yangzhou, but the attraction is not in central Yangzhou. Plan separate transport and meals for Gaoyou rather than treating it as a walking stop near Dongguan Street, Geyuan, or Slender West Lake.
The main entrance is on South Gate Outer Street. Ancient Yuchengyi, the old postal route, Drum Tower, and postal-culture displays are concentrated in the old town. Allow about 1 hour for a quick visit, or 1.5–2 hours if you add the postal culture exhibition, China Stamp Collectors Museum, and nearby old-town walking.
Ticket records allow for CNY 25 or CNY 30, so confirm the day's price when buying. From October to April, opening is about 08:15–17:30 with last admission at 17:00. From May to September, hours are about 08:15–18:00 with last admission at 17:30.
Who is it for?
Ancient Yuchengyi suits visitors interested in Ming-era postal stations, old transport systems, city gates, and historic buildings. The main sights are concentrated and the walk is short, making it a useful history stop during a Gaoyou day trip or after arriving from Gaoyou high-speed rail station.
If you only want a nearby attraction in central Yangzhou and have little interest in postal history, keep Ancient Yuchengyi for a separate Gaoyou visit. Decide whether the transport time fits your itinerary before adding it.

Huanghua Hall, Zhujietang, and Drum Tower
From the South Gate entrance, start with Huanghua Hall and Zhujietang, then continue to Drum Tower. Drum Tower is the easiest building to recognize and helps explain how the station related to movement through the old city. Look at the woodwork, doors, windows, and courtyard details as you walk.
The quick route focuses on the main buildings and tower. Visitors interested in architecture can use softer morning or afternoon light for the entrance halls, courtyards, and tower direction.
Postal culture and the old route
The postal-culture exhibition explains the station system, document delivery, and historic transport. The old postal route and South Gate street connect the buildings to Gaoyou's old-town setting. Walk slowly enough to notice the lanes, water, and old-city layout.
The time spent in the displays and courtyards depends partly on whether a guide is available. Ask after entering whether a free session is running, then set your pace around the actual time.
China Stamp Collectors Museum and nearby stops
The China Stamp Collectors Museum can extend the full route for visitors interested in stamps, postal history, and collecting. Confirm that it is open that day before adding it. It is a different visit from the main Yuchengyi buildings.
Other Gaoyou options include Zhenguo Temple, the Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall, and Wenyoutai, but they need transport connections. The Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall is closed on Mondays, and every nearby stop should be planned with its own opening time.
Build your day
The one-hour Ancient Yuchengyi route
Enter from the South Gate and visit Huanghua Hall, Zhujietang, and Drum Tower. Follow the main courtyards and the old postal route for a short section, then leave through the South Gate. This covers the main buildings and postal-space layout for a visitor arriving from the station or catching a later train.
With limited time, finish Drum Tower, the main hall, and the core displays first. Nearby Gaoyou attractions require transport, so do not turn the one-hour route into a rushed cross-town itinerary.
The 1.5- to 2-hour full route
Enter through the South Gate and follow Huanghua Hall, Zhujietang, Drum Tower, the postal-culture exhibition, and the old postal route. Add the China Stamp Collectors Museum or South Gate street if it is open and time allows.
Visitors who enjoy history and architecture can give the woodwork, courtyards, tower, and displays separate attention. After leaving, eat around South Gate and decide whether to continue to Zhenguo Temple, Wenyoutai, or the high-speed rail station.
A full Gaoyou culture day
Arrive in Gaoyou in the morning. Visit Ancient Yuchengyi and the China Stamp Collectors Museum first, eat around South Gate, and use the afternoon for Wenyoutai, the Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall, or Zhenguo Temple according to opening and transport arrangements.
Place admission-based attractions in the first half of the day and leave the afternoon flexible. Zhenguo Temple and other outer stops are not connected by a simple walk from Yuchengyi, so use a taxi or local bus. If you only have one day for central Yangzhou, plan Gaoyou separately.
Get there
From Gaoyou high-speed rail station
A taxi from Gaoyou high-speed rail station takes about 10 minutes. Tell the driver to use the main entrance at 13 Guanyi Road outside the South Gate, then walk into the old-town area.
You can also use Gaoyou Tourist Route 15, a blue local minibus. Allow extra time for waiting and the return trip if you have a train ticket later that day.
Driving and parking
Parking can be planned at about CNY 5 for 6 hours, with the actual location depending on the day's open areas. The old-town roads near the entrance are not good places to search for a temporary space, so park first and then walk in.
Note the direction from the car to the South Gate. You can eat around South Gate after the visit, but if the car is outside the old town, allow time to walk back and leave Gaoyou.
From central Yangzhou
Ancient Yuchengyi is outside the central Yangzhou walking area. Plan intercity travel, movement after arrival, and the return in one half-day or full-day itinerary. Do not estimate the journey from the map distance between central Yangzhou attractions.
If you are staying in central Yangzhou, Ancient Yuchengyi works better as a separate day or half-day destination. If your schedule has only one day for Yangzhou's old town, complete the central sights first and add Gaoyou only if the transport time fits.
Know before you go
Ticket, seasonal hours, and closures
The ticket may be CNY 25 or CNY 30; confirm the price when buying. From October to April, the hours are about 08:15–17:30 with last admission at 17:00. From May to September, they are about 08:15–18:00 with last admission at 17:30.
Other Gaoyou museums may have different closing days and hours. If you add the Wang Zengqi Memorial Hall or another nearby site, schedule each one separately rather than using Yuchengyi's hours for the whole city.
Courtyards, streets, and weather
Ancient Yuchengyi includes courtyards, old lanes, and outdoor walking. Summer sun can be strong, so carry water and sun protection. In rain, wear shoes with good grip. You can start with the indoor displays and walk the old postal route when the weather is comfortable.
Gaoyou's old town is suitable for a slow walk, but streets and side lanes can be narrow. Stand aside when taking photographs, and confirm the price and portion before ordering food or buying souvenirs.
Guiding and local food
Ask after entering whether a free guiding session is available and join according to the time. The guide's schedule can change, so keep the main route workable and use the explanation as an added layer.
South Gate street is a practical place to try Yangchun noodles, pubao pork, and Gaoyou salted duck eggs. Ask about ingredients if you have dietary restrictions. If you plan to carry salted duck eggs or other food onward, consider packaging and storage.
