Plan at a glance
A separate boat activity inside the park
The Slender West Lake cruise suits visitors who want to see the park from the water, reduce part of the walking, or photograph Five-Pavilion Bridge and Twenty-Four Bridge from a different angle. Park admission and the boat are separate arrangements. A daytime park ticket does not automatically include a cruise, and night visits have their own seasonal and event arrangements.
Common choices include a fixed sightseeing boat from South Gate toward Twenty-Four Bridge, a rowing boat, and a self-drive electric boat. The fixed boat is the quickest option. A rowing boat gives a slower water-level experience. A self-drive electric boat works better for a group that wants more control over its pace.
Prices and time needed
The large sightseeing boat is CNY 60 per person. A rowing boat is CNY 100 per person. A self-drive electric boat costs about CNY 200–260 per hour, plus a CNY 400 deposit, and usually carries 5–6 people. The electric boat must be returned to the rental point.
The fixed sightseeing boat itself takes about 10–15 minutes, but the full stop also includes walking, waiting, and the next land section. Allow about 1–1.5 hours for a fixed boat and a short stop near Twenty-Four Bridge. If you combine South Gate admission, Five-Pavilion Bridge, a self-drive boat, and more sightseeing, plan 2–3 hours.

Fixed sightseeing boat: for a quick water view
The fixed sightseeing boat runs from the South Gate wharf toward the Twenty-Four Bridge area and takes about 10–15 minutes. It works well when the cruise is an addition to a walking visit. After getting off, you still need to walk toward an exit or another sight; the short boat ride covers only the water section.
The enclosed large boat has air conditioning, which is comfortable in hot weather, but the windows can reflect light in photographs. When choosing a boat, balance comfort against open views if photography is important.
Rowing boat: for a slower pace
The rowing boat follows a set route and costs CNY 100 per person. It includes a manually rowed experience and may include traditional singing. It suits visitors with more time who are willing to wait for a boat, especially on holidays.
A rowing boat is better for looking closely at the gardens along the shore than for covering every sight in the park. You still need to walk after getting off, so decide your exit gate in advance.
Self-drive electric boat: for groups
The self-drive electric boat carries about 5–6 people, is charged by the hour, and requires a CNY 400 deposit. It offers more control over the group's pace, but the renter is responsible for the time, travel area, and return point.
It works well as an extra water section when you are already walking near Five-Pavilion Bridge. For groups with older adults or children, estimate boarding, waiting, and walking time before choosing this option.
Build your day
Fixed boat from South Gate to Twenty-Four Bridge
Enter at South Gate and check the day's wharf arrangement before choosing a fixed sightseeing boat toward the Twenty-Four Bridge area. After getting off, continue to Twenty-Four Bridge, Xichuntai, and the White Pagoda, then leave from West Gate or North Gate according to your route.
If you want to see the park's main sights as well, walk Long Causeway, Diaoyu Terrace, and Five-Pavilion Bridge before deciding whether to board. This keeps you from rushing away from the main gardens just to catch a boat.
Self-drive electric boat route
The self-drive rental area is near the water around Five-Pavilion Bridge, about a short walk from South Gate. Before leaving, confirm the hourly charge, passenger limit, deposit, and return wharf. Return to the same point within the agreed time.
Add this boat while you are already near Five-Pavilion Bridge. Do not rent it just before closing, because returning the boat, walking back to land, and reaching the exit all take time.
How to handle a night visit
Night cruises usually appear from March to November, but exact sessions and programs are not fixed every day. Leave separate time for park admission, the lakeside walk, and the cruise. Day tickets, night tickets, and boat fares are different products.
The broader daytime visit follows the park's main route. The cruise visit focuses on choosing a boat, waiting, boarding, photography, and returning the boat.
Get there
Starting from South Gate
South Gate is at 28 Dahongqiao Road. City buses stop at “Slender West Lake,” followed by a walk to the gate. South Gate is a practical starting point for both the fixed sightseeing boat and the self-drive electric boat.
West, North, and East Gates can also be used, but the exit you choose changes the walking distance after the boat. Decide your exit, whether Daming Temple is next, and your return transport before choosing a boat.
Parking and walking inside the park
For driving, consider parking near South Gate, the Twenty-Four Bridge area, West Gate, or Liuhu Road. Spaces are tight on holidays. After parking, allow for walking to the South Gate wharf, the Five-Pavilion Bridge water area, or Twenty-Four Bridge; the map's straight-line distance will underestimate the time.
If you enter at South Gate and leave at North Gate, you still need to walk the northern section after the cruise. A fixed boat and a shorter main-sights route are easier to manage with children or heavy camera equipment.
Know before you go
Separate fares and the electric-boat deposit
The fixed sightseeing boat, rowing boat, and self-drive electric boat use different pricing systems. The electric boat is about CNY 200–260 per hour plus a CNY 400 deposit. Park daytime admission, a night ticket, and the cruise fare are separate.
Before paying, decide which product you need: the fixed route, rowing boat, or self-drive electric boat. Do not assume a park ticket includes any of them.
Waiting and boat type
Fixed boats and rowing boats may have queues on holidays, and night sessions can involve longer waits. An enclosed boat has air conditioning but window reflections. An open boat gives clearer views but exposes you to sun, wind, and easier boarding concerns.
Returning the boat and safety
The self-drive electric boat must be returned to its rental point. Leave enough time before closing for the return. Follow staff instructions when boarding and getting off, and keep within the safe passenger area when taking photographs.
Ticket and service offers
People at the entrance may offer scalped tickets or unofficial guiding. Use the park's normal ticket and boat arrangements. Before renting a boat, confirm the price, deposit, duration, and return location, and keep the relevant receipt or record.
