Plan at a glance
The site and two museums
The Helankou Rock Art Site, Yinchuan World Rock Art Museum, and Yinchuan Han Meilin Art Museum are all within the Helan Mountain Rock Art Scenic Area. Start in a museum to learn about the carvings, follow a canyon trail to see them on the rock faces, then visit the Han Meilin Art Museum for contemporary works. Together, these stops connect ancient images, conservation and research, and a modern artistic response.
Allow half a day
Allow about 2–3 hours for the rock art site and a brief visit to the Han Meilin Art Museum. If you also visit the World Rock Art Museum and join a guided tour, 3–4 hours is more comfortable. Your visit may take longer depending on tour times, shuttle waits, and time in the galleries. If an event or partial closure changes access, follow the route open that day.

Choose your visit
World Rock Art Museum: start with the background
Yinchuan World Rock Art Museum displays rubbings, replicas, and original objects from rock art sites in different regions. Its exhibitions also cover rock art research and conservation, and the museum has digital experiences. Check the gallery guide first, then choose displays that interest you rather than trying to read every panel.
Helankou Site: look for images along the trail
Rock carvings appear on both sides of the canyon. Common subjects include human faces, animals, handprints, and scenes from daily life. The “Sun God” and other human-face images are popular examples. Weathering has made some carvings difficult to see; following a guide or listening to the on-site introduction can help you notice details that are easy to miss if you only stop for photos.
Han Meilin Art Museum: see a contemporary response
The Han Meilin Art Museum displays paintings, calligraphy, and sculpture, including many works inspired by the rock art of Helan Mountain. Notice how the artist reworks the carved lines and figures into new forms. The building follows the mountain setting, so the galleries and their window views also show how the architecture relates to the landscape.
Choose based on your time and interests
First-time visitors interested in ancient cultures can visit the World Rock Art Museum, the site trail, and the Han Meilin Art Museum. If time is limited, prioritise the rock art site and choose one museum based on your interests. Visitors drawn to modern art may want to spend longer at the Han Meilin Art Museum.
For a separate forest-and-mountain visit with its own entrance and transport, see Ningxia Helan Mountain National Forest Park.
Build your day
Full half-day route
Follow this order: World Rock Art Museum, shuttle, Helankou Rock Art Site, Yinchuan Han Meilin Art Museum, then the exit. The museum provides background before you look for related carvings at the site; the art museum then offers a contemporary response. At the entrance, ask where the shuttle stops that day and when guided tours begin so you can make the session you want.
Short route: 2–3 hours
Ask at the visitor centre which shorter route and shuttle services are available that day. Focus your time on the site trail and the Han Meilin Art Museum. If you also want to enter the World Rock Art Museum, shorten other stops or extend your visit. This estimate does not include a long queue, a full guided tour, or a detailed visit to every gallery.
Allow time for paths and steps
The museum area and rock art site are connected by walking or shuttle, and some approach routes have slopes or steps. If you are travelling with older adults or children, ask staff which route is easier and allow time to board, wait, and rest along the way. If a path closes temporarily, follow the signs and do not enter closed areas.
Get there
Check buses and seasonal services
Tourist Route 2 (游二路) and Tourist Route 3 (游三路) are options to check for service to Helan Mountain Rock Art; Route 3 also serves Zhenbeipu Western Film Studio. Tourist routes can change with the season and visitor numbers. Check Yinchuan Bus’s notice for the day, including the departure point, outbound and return trips, and whether the service is running.
Use a shuttle or ride-hailing car
Check whether a direct scenic-area shuttle runs from central Yinchuan, and confirm its boarding points and return time before buying a ticket. For a ride-hailing car or taxi, set the destination to “贺兰山岩画游客中心” (Helan Mountain Rock Art Visitor Centre). Arrange your pickup point before leaving; mobile coverage and vehicle availability in the mountains may differ from downtown.
Drive to the visitor centre
Set your map destination to “贺兰山岩画游客中心” (Helan Mountain Rock Art Visitor Centre) and follow the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains from central Yinchuan. There is a car park at the scenic area; check that day’s fees and available spaces. On holidays or during popular events, leave earlier and allow time to walk from the car park to the entrance.
Know before you go
Check opening times and tickets
Reference opening hours are 8:00 am–6:00 pm, but weather, events, or seasonal changes may affect access. If you plan to visit both museums, confirm each one’s opening days, last admission, and reservation requirements. For the day’s arrangements, call 0951-3948806.
Walk carefully and protect the carvings
The site is an outdoor mountain route. Wear shoes with good grip, bring water, and prepare for sun, wind, and dust. The rock surfaces are fragile: stay on boardwalks and open trails, and do not touch, make rubbings of, or climb on the carvings. Keep a safe distance from wildlife such as blue sheep (bharal). Do not approach, chase, or feed them.
Ask about each museum’s admission arrangements
The World Rock Art Museum and Han Meilin Art Museum have different exhibitions. Ask at the visitor centre how entry to each museum works and whether it is included with the scenic-area ticket.
