Plan at a glance
From prehistoric remains to the Ming Great Wall
Shuidonggou brings together a Paleolithic archaeological site, Ming-era sections of the Great Wall and fortifications, loess canyons, and the underground Soldiers’ Cave (藏兵洞). The Shuidonggou Site Museum makes a useful first stop; the Great Wall and cave then take you into the area’s frontier-defence history. The visit combines several walks with shuttle and water transport, so plan for at least half a day.
Allow half a day and check the day’s activities
Allow about 4–5 hours for the museum, Great Wall, and Soldiers’ Cave. Add time if you plan to join a guided tour, watch a performance, or try an activity. Transport and shows may be sold separately or included in different ticket packages. Check the day’s route map and ticket details before deciding what to add.

Choose your visit
Shuidonggou Site Museum: begin with the archaeological story
The museum introduces Shuidonggou’s Paleolithic culture through the site’s discovery, archaeological excavations, and evidence of prehistoric life. Seeing the displays before visiting the outdoor sites helps connect the objects with the place and the excavation process. Ask at the entrance whether motion-based or digital experiences are open and whether they cost extra.
Ming Great Wall and Hongshan Fort: explore frontier remains
The grounds include sections of the Ming rammed-earth Great Wall, fortifications, and related exhibitions. The story continues from the galleries into the open landscape. Near the wall, watch your footing and follow edge warnings. Shorten your stop in strong wind or sun. Check the on-site signs before heading to the “One Step Between Ningxia and Inner Mongolia” photo spot, as access may vary.
Soldiers’ Cave: follow the guided route
Soldiers’ Cave is an underground passage built into the canyon cliffs, with bends and branching sections. Follow a guide or the marked visitor route. Some sections require you to bend down and the passage can be narrow, so watch your footing and keep space between people. Stay on the open route and follow the signs.
Choose transport and performances separately
A distinctive part of the visit is travelling between sections by camel cart, horse-drawn cart, boat, and park shuttle. Which vehicles are available depends on the route and the day’s operations. Live shows such as “Beijiang Tiange” (《北疆天歌》) may run in certain seasons. If there is a performance that day, check its time and what your ticket includes, then plan nearby stops and your return around it.
Build your day
Full route: 4–5 hours
Start at the site museum, then continue via Zhang San’s Shop (张三小店) and Yuangu Homestead (原古家园) to the Ming Great Wall. Depending on the route open that day, continue past the Hongshan Lake area (红山湖), Shazao Bay (沙枣湾), and the performance venue. Follow the canyon and frontier-trade area to Soldiers’ Cave, then leave through the South Gate of Hongshan Fort (红山堡南门) as signposted. The Great Wall Museum is near the cave exit; visit it if it is open. Open stops, transport, and the exit direction can change by day, so use the route map and on-site signs.
Short route: 2–3 hours
If time is limited, start at the Site Museum, confirm the shuttle connections, and choose key stops along the open route, such as the Great Wall, canyon, or Soldiers’ Cave. If the cave is your main goal, follow the scenic area’s signs from the earlier route and check your ticket type, entry time, and return transport. You can shorten stops along the way, but do not rush the cave visit or transfers.
Leave room for transfers
The scenic area has several boarding and transfer points, and waiting, queues, and activity stops all affect the total visit time. When you enter, ask about the last shuttle and the exit direction. If a transport segment stops running or a show is delayed, protect your return connection and adjust the route as staff advise.
Get there
Direct bus from Yinchuan
Tourist buses from central Yinchuan may run to Shuidonggou in certain seasons or for special events. Departure stops and timetables follow the current notice. Before booking, confirm that the bus goes directly to the visitor centre, where to board for the return trip, and the last departure.
Connect from Lingwu or the airport
A tourist bus linking Lingwu, Hedong Airport, and Shuidonggou began a three-month trial on July 27, 2026. It may suit travellers starting in Lingwu or arriving at the airport. Reconfirm whether the trial service has been extended and check the day’s timetable. If you are connecting to a flight, allow time for airport security and boarding.
Drive or take a ride-hailing car
Set your map destination to “水洞沟旅游区游客中心” (Shuidonggou Tourist Area Visitor Centre). The scenic area website gives the distance as about 19 km from central Yinchuan and 11 km from Hedong Airport. There is a car park; check the day’s parking and entrance arrangements. Estimate your drive using live traffic, and consider booking a ride-hailing car before the afternoon return rush.
Know before you go
Check hours and ticket inclusions
Reference opening hours are 8:30 am–6:00 pm, but seasonal or event arrangements may change them. Confirm the last entry time before travelling. Admission, Soldiers’ Cave, transport, motion-based experiences, and performances may be sold separately or in packages; check exactly what each ticket includes before buying.
Prepare for outdoor walks and the cave
Sun can be strong on the open stretches. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, and bring water, sun protection, and a layer suited to the weather. Soldiers’ Cave is narrow and winding. If you have limited mobility or difficulty bending, ask staff before entering. Keep children close while moving through the passage.
Check show and transport times for your date
The “Beijiang Tiange” (《北疆天歌》) show schedule may change with the season or event programme. If you plan to attend, check the day’s programme and what the performance ticket covers. Confirm the return bus, direct shuttle, and last departure separately; do not estimate your departure from the show’s end time alone.
