Plan at a glance
Follow a thread through Ningxia’s history
Ningxia Museum is on Renmin Guangchang East Street (人民广场东街) in Jinfeng District, Yinchuan. Its permanent exhibitions cover Ningxia’s history, rock art, and folk culture. First-time visitors can start with the general history exhibition, then choose one or two themed galleries. There is a lot to see, so focusing on your interests will be more rewarding than rushing through every floor.
Allow around two hours
Allow about 1.5 hours for the general history exhibition and a few representative objects. If you add the rock art, folk-culture, and temporary exhibitions, 2–3 hours is more comfortable. Guided tours, advance reservations, and holiday crowds can affect your visit time. Also allow time to exit the museum and travel to your next stop.

Choose your visit
Ningxia Through the Ages: the “Shuose Changtian” exhibition
The museum’s general history exhibition, “Shuose Changtian” (《朔色长天——宁夏通史陈列》), presents Ningxia’s history from prehistoric times to the modern era. Follow the timeline through regional cultures, contact between ethnic groups, and the Western Xia period, then take a closer look at displays that interest you. The gilt bronze ox, for example, offers a tangible glimpse of Western Xia metalworking.
“A History Carved in Stone” (《石刻史书》): explore rock art
The rock art exhibition presents carvings from the Helan Mountains and related stonework. It suits visitors interested in archaeology, images, and early human life. Look at the pictures and explanations in the gallery, then compare them with the mountain setting at the outdoor rock art site to see how a museum exhibition differs from the carvings in place.
Folk-culture gallery: life along the Yellow River
“Rich Ningxia by the Yellow River” (《天下黄河富宁夏——宁夏民俗陈列》) explores local life and folk culture. It is a good choice if you want to look beyond the history galleries and learn about everyday traditions. If you are visiting with children, choose a few objects together and read their labels; this can make the visit easier than standing at display cases for too long.
Choose a temporary exhibition for your date
As of October 17, 2026, the second-floor temporary gallery is showing *Bronze Splendour of the West: A Joint Exhibition of Bronze Artefacts from Sichuan and Ningxia in the Pre-Qin Period*. The exhibition is scheduled to run through December 3. Temporary exhibitions change, so if you are visiting for a particular show, check the current exhibition notice and gallery access before setting out.
To explore the Western Xia beyond the museum galleries, visit Western Xia Imperial Tombs.
Build your day
Highlights route: about 1.5 hours
Start with “Shuose Changtian,” then look for representative objects such as the gilt bronze ox and the stone-carved tomb door depicting the Hu Xuan dance (Whirling Dance). If time allows, choose one themed gallery. Before leaving, take a few minutes to check the exit, museum shop, and route to your next stop.
Full route: 2–3 hours
Visit the general history exhibition first, followed by the rock art gallery and folk-culture exhibition. Finish with the temporary gallery if it is open that day. Gallery locations and access arrangements may change; check the floor guide or ask the service desk and follow the actual open route.
Fit a guide and rest breaks into the visit
The museum offers free guided tours, but times are set by the visitor service desk on the first floor each day. You can also use the in-museum audio guide. Pause to rest or read the exhibition labels between galleries. If members of your group have different interests, agree on a meeting point and time before splitting up.
Get there
Take a bus to the museum
Ningxia Museum is at No. 6 Renmin Guangchang East Street (人民广场东街6号). Nearby bus options include routes 36, 39, and 101. Routes and stops may change, so check the day’s bus information and set your map destination to “宁夏博物馆.”
Drive or use nearby parking
Museum parking is limited and can be especially busy on holidays, so consider taking a bus or ride-hailing car. If you drive, check which nearby car parks are open and their fees, then walk to the museum. At the entrance, follow the signs to the public visitor entrance.
Know before you go
Check opening hours
Regular hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 am–5:00 pm, with last admission at 4:30 pm. The museum is closed on Mondays. Public holidays and special events may have different arrangements. Longer summer or holiday hours have been offered in the past; check the museum’s notice for your visit date.
Reserve free admission
Admission is free. Advance real-name reservations are usually available through the official “Ningxia Museum” WeChat account; recent notices allow booking up to three days ahead. Reservation rules, entry credentials, and whether walk-in registration is available can change with visitor demand, so check the current notice before travelling. If you are visiting with a foreign passport, check whether the online reservation system accepts your document type and whether an alternative entry procedure is available.
Check temporary exhibitions and guided tours
The dates, gallery, and guided-tour arrangements for temporary exhibitions may change. The museum says tour services follow its on-site schedule. Do not buy a guided-tour service through an unauthorised platform.
Save energy for an indoor visit
Most of the visit involves walking through galleries. Wear comfortable shoes and plan breaks if you are visiting with children. Keep your voice low and follow gallery instructions. Check the signs for photography rules and any areas where flash or photography is restricted.
