Set aside separate time for the tower

The main Yueyang Tower is inside Yueyang Tower Scenic Area, but it deserves its own time. Treat it as the focus of the visit, not just one stop in a longer route.

Look at the exterior before going inside

The tower's three levels, four main columns, flying eaves, and helmet-shaped roof are its most recognizable features. Look at the full structure from outside first, then go in to see the timber construction, columns, and carved screens.

Move floor by floor

On the first floor, focus on the carved screens and poetry connected with "Memorial to Yueyang Tower." This is the easiest entry point for understanding the tower's cultural status. The second floor is better for calligraphy and displays, while the third floor gives the main view toward Dongting Lake.

Move carefully when taking photos

The interior is not very wide, and stairs and window areas can become congested. Avoid stopping too long on stairways or holding a window position just for photos, especially when the tower is busy.

Keep expectations clear

The main tower is about architecture, literature, and the lake view. Sanzui Pavilion, the stele corridors, and Xiao Qiao's Tomb are supporting stops. Do not expect the tower itself to feel like a large museum with many exhibits.
