How to Visit
1

Use the Drum Tower as a short landmark stop

Place it at the northern end of the Old Street and Ancient City walking sequence, allowing 20-40 minutes.

Tip:It does not replace the full Six Towers Across the Street route.
2

Read the building from street level

First observe the four-way arched base and its relationship with the street, then look at the upper pavilion. The present structure was rebuilt on its original site.

Tip:Its location and form are the key points of a short visit.
3

Use it to orient the six-tower route

If walking from south to north, use the Drum Tower as the route's finish. If starting at the north end, use it as the starting point before continuing south through the other five towers.

Tip:This keeps the tower in its proper context within the complete old-city sequence.
Highlights
  • The northern anchor of the six-tower sequence and a clear endpoint for the old-city axis.
  • A cave-dwelling-style cruciform arched base with four gateways, characteristic of northern Shaanxi.
  • The pavilion, street, pedestrians, and shops form a compact urban scene for a short stop.
  • It is most meaningful as part of the full six-tower sequence rather than in isolation.
Insider Tips

The public street around the Drum Tower is free to pass through at any time; do not treat it as an all-day indoor museum.

Traffic, pedestrians, and photographers converge at the road junction, so take care when crossing.

It works best as part of the Old Street walk; a standalone visit does not need 1-2 hours.

Evening lighting varies by season and management arrangements, so allow time in daylight to see the base and roof details.

Respect nearby businesses and residents; do not occupy doorways for extended photography.
