How to Visit
1

Start near Zhenyuan Gate and walk north

Use Old Street as the central walking corridor for the Six Towers Across the Street sequence, allowing 2-3 hours.

Tip:This is the main pedestrian section of the historic district, not a separate walk to add on after the Ancient City.
2

Follow the six-tower sequence

Walk in the order of Wenchang Pavilion, Wanfo Tower, Xingming Tower, Bell Tower, Kaige Tower, and Drum Tower.

Tip:The Drum Tower is the northern landmark and route finish, not a substitute for the full sequence.
3

Rely on walking as the main transport

Walking is the most reliable way to visit. If a sightseeing shuttle is operating that day, use it only as a rest option rather than building the itinerary around a fixed schedule.

Tip:The route remains easy to follow on foot even when no shuttle is available.
4

Use side lanes selectively

After the main street, choose one or two side lanes for a short look, then return to the central route.

Tip:Do not enter residential lanes or courtyards as though they were open exhibits.
Highlights
  • The continuous Six Towers Across the Street arrangement along the central axis.
  • Local food, small shops, and everyday city life alongside historic architecture.
  • Grey-brick street scenes and cross-street towers, suitable for architecture in daylight and street atmosphere after dark.
  • Older courtyards and daily-life businesses in side lanes add context beyond the main street.
Insider Tips

The public street is free to access; shops, museums, and climbable towers keep their own hours.

An evening visit can combine daytime architectural details with night street scenes, but do not rely on heritage performances being held every day.

Restaurants can queue at meal times, so complete the main walk before dining.

Ask before photographing residents, shop staff, or children. Do not block doorways or make excessive noise.

Old Street and the Ancient City substantially overlap, so count the walking time only once.
