How to Visit
1

Allow time for an old-town walk

Treat Gaojiabao as a separate walking stop and allow around 1.5-2 hours.

Tip:It is not part of the same admission arrangement as Shimao Museum or the Shimao Ruins.
2

Walk out from Zhongxing Tower

Enter through an old-city gate, then explore around Zhongxing Tower and through East, West, and South Streets as well as North Street.

Tip:See the overall grid of lanes before exploring quieter alleys.
3

Choose a walking theme

Visitors interested in Ordinary World or film locations can make West Street's old-style storefronts and streets their main route.

Tip:Other visitors do not need to visit every filming location for a worthwhile walk.
4

Use it as the day's final stop

When visiting with the Shimao area on the same day, make the old town a gentler final stop after the ruins.

Tip:Leave enough time for the return to Yulin rather than rushing the last part of the day.
Highlights
  • A well-preserved Ming-period fortress layout, with old gates and surviving barbican features.
  • Zhongxing Tower as the visual centre for understanding the town's street plan.
  • A lived-in old town rather than a single enclosed museum.
  • Ordinary World filming locations that give literature and screen fans a clear walking theme.
Insider Tips

Stone paving and uneven lanes are common, so wear comfortable flat shoes with good grip.

This is a residential old town: respect private homes and do not enter courtyards that are not open to visitors.

Shops, tower access, and small exhibits may keep separate hours; do not treat the whole walking area as one uniformly operated attraction.

Morning and late-afternoon light is softer for photography, but do not shorten the return-time buffer for photos.

Gaojiabao is good for a slow walk and a meal stop; it does not replace the archaeological experience at Shimao.
