How to Visit
1

Treat the Ancient City and Old Street as one walk

Think of Yulin Ancient City as the wider historic district, with Old Street as its most walkable central axis. Do not schedule them as two separate half-day visits.

Tip:Use one shared time allowance for the overlapping street network.
2

Walk north through the central axis

Begin near Zhenyuan Gate and walk north through the six-tower sequence to the Drum Tower. With short stops, allow 2-3 hours.

Tip:The north-south route gives a clearer sense of the historic district than moving randomly between individual landmarks.
3

Choose indoor stops only if they are open

If a tower or indoor venue is open that day, choose one stop such as Wanfo Tower or Kaige Tower.

Tip:Let actual access determine the stop rather than disrupting the main walking route.
4

Separate the northern scenic stops

Finish the main street walk with a meal nearby or continue to another city stop. Zhenbeitai and Hongshixia should be separate vehicle-based visits.

Tip:Do not try to extend the old-city walk to those northern attractions.
Highlights
  • The wider scale of a Ming frontier city, rather than only a single commercial street.
  • Six cross-street towers create a clear north-south route that is easy to understand on foot.
  • Main streets and side lanes combine historic form with residential life and local food.
  • The district works well after dark, but its main value is the complete walking sequence rather than one landmark.
Insider Tips

The public historic district is free to enter and can be walked through at any time; indoor venues, shops, and climbable buildings do not share one timetable.

Avoid driving into the core walking area. Get out on the perimeter and continue on foot.

If also visiting Old Street, use the same north-south route and do not duplicate the time allowance.

Some courtyards remain residential or work spaces. Do not enter where access is closed, signed, or controlled.

Summer afternoons can be hot and exposed; bring water and place the longer walk toward late afternoon where possible.
