Location and entrance
Houtu Temple is in Miaoqian Village on Ronghou Road, Ronghe Town, Wanrong County, Yuncheng. Navigate to “Houtu Temple Scenic Area”; the entrance is the scenic area’s main gate. Drivers can use the car park, with parking costing about CNY 10 per day; public-transport visitors need a local shared ride or taxi for the final section.
Ticket and opening
Admission is CNY 20 per person and is covered by the Yuncheng Annual Tourism Pass (运城旅游年卡). Opening hours are 08:30–18:00, with last admission at 17:30; no reservation is required. Confirm the pass-validation conditions at the ticket counter.
How much time to allow
Allow about 1 hour for Xian Hall (献殿, Offering Hall), the Main Hall and Autumn Wind Tower. Allow 1.5–2 hours to include the three-stage complex, wood carvings, the Five-Colour Altar and the views available within the open areas of Autumn Wind Tower. Follow the central axis through the courtyard; the exit may lead to a long newly built commercial street, so check the direction of the car park before leaving.

Autumn Wind Tower
Autumn Wind Tower stands on a high platform and is 32.6 metres tall. The Zhang Yi Ancient Road passes underneath, and the tower’s name is connected with Emperor Wu’s “Autumn Wind Song.” It is Houtu Temple’s main visual landmark. First look at the platform, tower body and passage from outside, then follow the area open to visitors when you arrive.
Wood carvings in the Main Hall
The four layers of openwork wood carving above the Main Hall’s doorway are carved from a single walnut board. The subjects and small details reward a slow look in side light. The carvings sit along the Xian Hall–Main Hall axis; photograph them from an open position without touching the timber or carved pieces.
Three-stage complex and Five-Colour Altar
The stage complex consists of three stages arranged in the shape of the Chinese character 品. Its courtyard layout allowed several opera troupes to perform at the same time and is best understood from within the courtyard. The Five-Colour Altar is behind Autumn Wind Tower. Visitors interested in ritual systems, wood carving and Yellow River culture can take the complete route; with limited time, keep the stages, Main Hall carvings and Autumn Wind Tower.
Build your day
An approximately 1-hour short route
Enter through the mountain gate and follow the central axis to Xian Hall and the Main Hall, focusing on the doorway wood carvings. Continue to the foot of Autumn Wind Tower for the platform and tower, then leave according to the exit signs. This route does not split the stage complex and Five-Colour Altar into separate detours, making it suitable when you need to control your time on a Wanrong day.
A 1.5–2-hour complete route
Follow Three-Stage Complex → Xian Hall → Main Hall → Autumn Wind Tower → Five-Colour Altar. Start in the courtyard by looking at the spatial relationship between the three stages, then study the wood carvings, and finish with the views available from Autumn Wind Tower and the high platform behind it towards the meeting direction of the Yellow and Fen Rivers. Leave through the exit and follow staff directions back to the car park.
A photography sequence
The front and side of Autumn Wind Tower work for overall views, while the passage leading to it gives a strong sense of depth. Use side light on the Main Hall wood carvings to bring out their texture. Stay within visitor routes; do not climb eaves, step onto the edge of the high platform or block the stage and passage for a photograph.

Driving and parking
Navigate to “Houtu Temple Scenic Area.” The scenic area has a car park, with parking costing about CNY 10 per day. The exit may lead to a long commercial street; ask staff directly for the car-park direction to avoid walking around it with luggage.
Public transport and shared rides
From Yuncheng Coach Station, take bus 107 to Wanrong West Station, then look for a shared ride organised towards Houtu Temple; a round-trip fare is about CNY 40. A ride-hailing app may also find a private shared ride. Shared rides, private rides and return waiting times are not fixed, so give the driver your return time and pick-up point when arranging the outward trip.
A Wanrong heritage day
Houtu Temple can be combined with Feiyun Tower and Li Family Courtyard for a Wanrong heritage route, with a driving time of about 30–50 minutes between stops. The three have separate entrances, tickets and opening hours; Houtu Temple’s CNY 20 ticket and Yuncheng Annual Tourism Pass conditions do not extend to Feiyun Tower or Li Family Courtyard.
Know before you go
Midday and timing
Some nearby restaurants and small shops may close for a midday break, so keep some flexibility for lunch. Last admission is at 17:30; if you arrive late, take the 1-hour short route rather than pushing the complete route past the last-admission time.
Tourism Pass and discounts
The Yuncheng Annual Tourism Pass is subject to the site’s validation requirements. Discount, free-entry and half-price conditions do not carry over to other Wanrong heritage sites; follow Houtu Temple’s on-site ticket rules when buying admission.
Food and return
The farm restaurant Sui Shang Renjia offers laziguokui and scrambled eggs with locust flowers. You can also return to Wanrong County Hotel or the county food street for yougao, liangfen and other local food. If you are not driving, arrange the return bus or shared-ride pick-up before walking through the commercial-street exit.
