Finding the entrance
Li Family Courtyard is in Yanjing Village, Wanrong County, Yuncheng. Navigate to “Li Family Courtyard.” The main gate carries a “Shanxi Charity Museum” sign, and the historic courtyard is behind a newly built commercial street. The frontage is easy to miss, so look for the stele and main gate before entering.
Tickets and opening
Tickets cost CNY 60 per person in peak season (April–October) and CNY 54 in the off-season (November–March of the following year); students pay half price and visitors aged 60 or above enter free with proof of age. Opening hours are 08:00–18:00. Until September 30, 2026, a half-price arrangement is recorded for holders of *Eight Immortals* film ticket stubs; confirm the ticket-stub requirement when buying admission.
How much time to allow
Allow about 1.5 hours for the central axis, the Hundred Good-Character Screen, the Li Clan Ancestral Hall and Yijing Tower. Add Tongshun Hall, the twelve-sided brick-carved screen, the private-school courtyard, Fangzhen Tower and the viewing pavilion for 2–3 hours. There are steps and slopes inside; comfortable flat shoes are more useful than rushing between sights, and public-transport visitors should allow real waiting time for the return.

The Hundred Good-Character Screen
The Hundred Good-Character Screen is made from 365 versions of the character “善” (“goodness”) in different typefaces, concentrating the compound’s idea of benevolent commerce in one wall. Look closely at the character forms and brick-carving work, and take photographs from an open position so that visitors stopping there do not block the central axis.
Yijing Tower’s Chinese–Western mix
At the compound’s northwest corner, Yijing Tower (Ziming Hall) combines Roman columns, a fireplace and an English dressing table with southern Shanxi courtyard houses, cave dwellings and Huizhou-style horse-head walls. The Chinese and Western details stand close together and reward a slow look. “Shanxi merchant compound” describes only part of what is here.
Three carving traditions and courtyard life
Brick, wood and stone carvings appear on courtyard walls, gate towers and interior furnishings, with subjects including opera stories, auspicious animals, flowers and birds. The private-school courtyard, Fangzhen Tower, Li Clan Ancestral Hall and Tongshun Hall connect family life, charity and the layout of the buildings. They suit visitors interested in residential architecture, family history and fine craft details.

An approximately 1.5-hour short route
Enter through the main gate, cross the commercial street into the historic-building area, follow the central axis to the Hundred Good-Character Screen and Li Clan Ancestral Hall, then turn to Yijing Tower (Ziming Hall) in the northwest before leaving through the exit. This route combines the character screen, ancestral hall and Chinese–Western architecture, and suits a tight schedule or a Wanrong day that continues to another stop.
A 2–3-hour complete route
After entering, start in the northwest with Yijing Tower and Tongshun Hall. Return to the central axis for the twelve-sided brick-carved screen, Hundred Good-Character Screen, private-school courtyard and Fangzhen Tower, then finish at the Li Clan Ancestral Hall and viewing pavilion. This order reduces backtracking. The pavilion includes an uphill section; in hot weather or when companions find walking difficult, finish at the ancestral hall instead.
A pace for visiting and photography
The Hundred Good-Character Screen works well for a frontal overall photograph, while Yijing Tower’s European-style windows and corridors offer architectural details. The viewing pavilion looks down over the courtyard layout. Do not climb roofs, gate towers or closed steps for a photograph; keep away from the brick, wood and stone elements, and follow any photography notices on site.
Get there
Driving and parking
Navigate to “Li Family Courtyard.” The scenic area has a car park, with parking costing about CNY 10 per day. After parking, follow the commercial street towards the “Shanxi Charity Museum” main gate. A commercial stretch lies between the entrance and the historic courtyard, so do not assume the scenic area has ended at the shops and sales areas.
Public transport to the site
From Yuncheng Coach Station, take bus 107 to Wanrong County town, then change to a local shared ride. Drivers often organise shared rides at Wanrong Bus Station, but services, prices and waiting arrangements can change. Ask about the return when you board for the outward trip.
Return and a Wanrong heritage day
The “Hejin–Yuncheng” direction bus can be boarded beside the national highway outside the scenic area, but its last service and stopping point are not fixed. If you are not driving, treat the return vehicle as a key schedule constraint. Li Family Courtyard can be linked with Feiyun Tower and Houtu Temple for a Wanrong historic-architecture day; the three have separate tickets and entrances, with a driving time of about 30–50 minutes between stops and no shared admission.
Know before you go
Entrance, commercial street and walking effort
The entrance sign says “Shanxi Charity Museum,” and the historic buildings are behind the commercial street; ask directly for the main gate if you are unsure. There are many steps, slopes and brick-and-stone surfaces inside. With older adults or children, choose the short route according to the group’s walking ability; the uphill section to the viewing pavilion can be left out.
Changing discount
The half-price arrangement for *Eight Immortals* film ticket stubs is recorded through September 30, 2026; confirm the stub requirements and on-site application at the ticket counter. Li Family Courtyard’s CNY 60/54 seasonal tickets and free-entry conditions should also be checked before departure. Feiyun Tower and Houtu Temple have separate ticket arrangements.
Food in Wanrong
The Wanrong County Hotel restaurant offers set meals and local Wanrong yougao and chaibohuang. The county food street also has liangfen, flaky pastries and other snacks. A return bus is not guaranteed to arrive immediately; if the service is not confirmed, eat and resupply in the county town before leaving.
