Location and entrance
The official name is the “Guan Gong Hometown Cultural Tourism Area,” in Xiguan, Jiezhou Town, Yanhu District, Yuncheng. Navigate to the full scenic-area name or “Jiezhou Guandi Temple”; all visitors enter through the South Gate.
Tickets, reservations and opening
The ticket is CNY 60 per person in peak season (April–October) and CNY 50 in the off-season (November–March of the following year); students pay half price. The official WeChat account recommends real-name reservation and ticket purchase. Foreign visitors should confirm which document is accepted for the reservation, entry check and student discount before visiting; do not assume the Chinese identity-card process applies to every traveller. Opening is 08:00–18:00 in peak season and 09:00–17:00 in the off-season; times may change, so check before setting out.
How much time to allow
Allow 1.5–3 hours to follow the central axis through Jieyi Garden, Yushu Tower, Chongning Hall and the Spring and Autumn Tower. If you mainly want the principal buildings, take the 1.5–2-hour short route; for a first visit or a fuller courtyard sequence, allow about 3 hours and include the walk from the car park to the South Gate before entering.

What to see at Chongning Hall
Chongning Hall is the main hall of the temple. Its exterior has 26 Ming-dynasty coiling-dragon stone columns, whose carved details reward a close look. Inside and outside are imperial plaques including the Kangxi-era “Yi Bing Qiankun” and the Qianlong-era “Shenyong”; together they show the scale of the building and the cultural role of Guan Gong.
The Spring and Autumn Tower and Yushu Tower
The Spring and Autumn Tower is the temple’s tallest building. Its suspended-beam timber structure and chrysanthemum caisson ceiling are the main details; the second floor costs an additional CNY 30 and requires shoe covers, and access may change, so ask staff on arrival. The octagonal “two dragons playing with a pearl” caisson in Yushu Tower is worth looking up at and completes the architectural sequence along the central axis.
Who will enjoy this visit?
Visitors interested in Guan Gong culture, historic timber buildings, plaque calligraphy and architectural detail can walk from Jieyi Garden to the Spring and Autumn Tower. Photographers can use Duan Gate for red walls and yellow roofs, examine the coiling-dragon columns at Chongning Hall, and then look up at the caissons in Yushu Tower and the Spring and Autumn Tower. Incense and souvenirs are optional and should not be treated as a promised source of blessings.
Build your day
A 1.5–2-hour short route
Enter through the South Gate and follow the central axis north, passing Jieyi Garden, Duan Gate, Zhi Gate and Meridian Gate before focusing on Chongning Hall and the Spring and Autumn Tower. Leave by the same route or the signed visitor route. If the second floor of the Spring and Autumn Tower is closed that day, see the exterior and ground-floor structure instead of changing the whole itinerary for the climb.
An approximately 3-hour complete route
Follow Jieyi Garden → Duan Gate → Zhi Gate → Meridian Gate → Yushu Tower → Chongning Hall → Spring and Autumn Tower. This sequence avoids backtracking. Photograph the overall setting at Duan Gate, look at the caisson in Yushu Tower, study the dragon columns and plaques at Chongning Hall, and save the final time for the Spring and Autumn Tower. Return towards the South Gate and the car park; from the north car park, walk about 10 minutes or take the one-way sightseeing shuttle for about CNY 3.
Pace and guides on site
An on-site guide costs about CNY 80 per session, and popular periods may involve a queue. Ask at the entrance before deciding whether to wait. The souvenir shop is not necessarily on the return route, so buy anything you want when you encounter it; incense is also optional.
Get there
Parking and the South Gate connection
The official north car park is farther from the South Gate, about a 10-minute walk away; a one-way sightseeing shuttle costs about CNY 3. There are closer parking options opposite All Seasons Hotel or Zhouji Mutton Soup, but spaces and management can change. Follow the signs on arrival; a nearby parking place is not automatically a scenic-area entrance.
From Yuncheng city to Jiezhou
Bus services and stop combinations between the city and Jiezhou are not fixed. A ride-hailing car, taxi or private car is more practical for the cross-district trip, and the return should be arranged at the same time. The South Gate is the main entrance, so use the full scenic-area name in navigation rather than the cultural phrase “Guan Gong’s Hometown” alone.
Food nearby
Wang Jian Mutton Soup is about 1 kilometre from the scenic area; mutton soup, cold dishes and Fenghulu (风葫芦) are possible choices. Lao Jiezhou Yuncheng Cuisine is another nearby option. Restaurant hours can change with the season and midday schedule, so check the restaurant’s hours before deciding when to eat.
Know before you go
The Spring and Autumn Tower’s second floor
The CNY 30 second-floor charge, shoe covers and access are all on-site conditions. Access to the second floor may change, so ask staff at entry if you want to go up; if it is closed that day, the first floor and central axis remain available. Do not cross barriers or look for a non-public passage.
Etiquette and photography
Photograph Duan Gate, the coiling-dragon columns and the caissons from open areas without blocking narrow passages. Keep quiet in this religious setting; incense and souvenirs are optional. Courtyards have limited shade in hot, strong sunlight, so wear comfortable shoes and carry water, with older adults and children setting the pace to their walking ability.
Changping–Jiezhou extension: Guandi Sacred Statue
Guandi Sacred Statue (关帝圣像) is about 10 kilometres from Jiezhou Guandi Temple and can be added to a Changping–Jiezhou Guan Gong heritage route. The statue site has its own entrance, tickets and parking. Tickets cost about CNY 33–40 per person; the Yuncheng Annual Tourism Pass (运城旅游年卡) may be accepted. Opening is roughly 08:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:30 and no reservation required; check the current opening and ticket details on arrival.
Driving from the main temple to the statue takes about 20–30 minutes. A cable car or sightseeing car can help with the climb to the statue platform, while public-transport services are limited, making a private-car connection more practical. Use only the site’s regular open route. Do not use the informal route known locally as “旱地拔葱”; access may be restricted.
