Location and entrance
Yellow River Datizhiya (黄河大梯子崖) is in Banpo Village, Xiahu Township, Hejin, Yuncheng. Navigate to “黄河大梯子崖景区” (“Yellow River Datizhiya Scenic Area”); the entrance is around Banpo Village. There is a car park, with parking costing about CNY 10 per day. By public transport, first reach Hejin, then change to a local bus or taxi.
Tickets and hours
Tickets cost CNY 60 per person in peak season (April–October) and CNY 50 in the off-season (November–March of the following year). Visitors aged 60 or above enter free with proof of age. Opening is 08:00–18:30; check ticket and free-entry rules with staff on arrival, as access and management can change.
Fitness and time needed
After taking the sightseeing car to Taohua Valley, the short route continues on foot along the cliffside stairs and takes about 1.5 hours. The complete route from the visitor centre through Taohua Valley and Datizhiya (大梯子崖) to Yiticheng takes about 3–4 hours and involves sustained climbing and outdoor walking. Visitors with a fear of heights, children and anyone with limited fitness should ask about a gentler detour; it may not be open.

The cliffside stairway
The Northern Wei cliffside stairway is about 100 metres long and climbs the sheer face beside the Yellow River. Its main interest is the combination of cliff, river valley and a built passage through the rock. The stairs are steep, so they suit visitors with steady walking ability who are willing to use the handrails and steps in grippy shoes; this is not a flat riverside walk.
The narrowest Yellow River section and Yiticheng
From the higher sections, you can see a sharp bend in the Yellow River where the narrowest point is less than 40 metres wide. The summit area is also linked to the local legend of “the carp leaping over the Dragon Gate.” The complete route continues to Yiticheng for more summit views and needs 3–4 hours; on the short route, turn back from a safe viewpoint.
Taohua Valley through the seasons
When peach blossoms open in early spring, Taohua Valley brings the gorge, wild peach trees and Yellow River into one view. The flowering period depends on the weather and cannot be guaranteed by a fixed date. In other seasons, use the valley as a buffer stop after getting off the sightseeing car: drink water and settle your pace before starting the stairs.

An approximately 1.5-hour short route
Take the sightseeing car from the visitor centre to Taohua Valley. Climb the zigzag cliffside stairway, view the narrowest section of the Yellow River from a safe summit platform, then return by the same route. Check sightseeing-car operation, departures and the drop-off point with staff before boarding. Confirm the vehicle or transfer for the descent before starting down, and leave before the scenic area’s closing time.
A 3–4-hour complete route
Follow Visitor Centre → Taohua Valley → Datizhiya (大梯子崖) → Yiticheng along the route open when you visit. Use Taohua Valley to organise your equipment, take the stairs slowly with a secure grip, and pause at the open viewpoint at Yiticheng before returning to the visitor centre by the required route. Do not leave the handrails or management boundary for an edge view.
Choosing the high-risk section
The scenic area has a “Feiyundu” climbing boardwalk on a cliff about 140 metres high. Some sections are less than 40 centimetres wide and partly lack railings, so Feiyundu is not included in the recommended route. Its opening, safety equipment and on-site restrictions must be confirmed; visitors with a fear of heights, children and those without mountain experience should use the ordinary viewing route or a detour offered on site.
Get there
Driving and parking
From Yuncheng or Hejin, navigate to “黄河大梯子崖景区” (“Yellow River Datizhiya Scenic Area”) and use the scenic-area car park on arrival; parking costs about CNY 10 per day. Mountain-road weather and road conditions can affect the journey, and a taxi may take time to arrive for the return. Set Hejin city or your accommodation as a clear destination before leaving.
Public transport
If you are not driving, first reach Hejin and then change to a local bus or taxi for the scenic area. Direct services and the last bus are not fixed. After reaching Hejin, ask about the outward trip, return trip and waiting arrangements; there may not be an immediate connecting vehicle at the entrance.
Water and food
The exposed sections have strong sun and the climb uses energy, so carry drinking water before starting the stairs. In Hejin, local choices include Paopao Yougao, Fancun mutton hubu and Yuquan Porridge House for a family meal. Supplies on the mountain are limited; do not wait until the summit to look for a full meal or large amounts of water.
Know before you go
Slippery ground and weather
The stairs, boardwalk and gorge sections can be steep and slippery. Wear sports shoes with good grip and hold the handrails while walking; after rain or when visibility is poor, adjust the route according to site management. Use sun protection in strong light, and do not stop at the cliff edge to take photographs when wind or rain arrives.
Safety at height
Visitors with a fear of heights and families with children should prioritise gentler sections or ask about a detour rather than following a group into a high-risk activity. Stay on open platforms, do not climb over railings, stop at unguarded edges or climb on wet surfaces, and do not lean your body out over the cliff route for a “danger shot.”
Returning from the scenic area
Waiting times for sightseeing cars, local buses and ride-hailing cars can change, especially for visitors without a private car. After the complete route, confirm the transfer down and away from the scenic area. If you continue to Hejin for food, follow the transport you have arranged and return to a managed route before dark.
