Separate free areas from paid experiences
Sixth Patriarch’s Hometown Tourist Resort is beside Liuzu Avenue in Liuzu Town, Xinxing County, Yunfu. The resort area is free to enter, and open areas such as Guoen Temple, Zen Domain Town and Longtan Lake Wetland Park can be visited directly. Hot springs, performances and hotels charge separately.
The resort is open all day, but the main religious site, Guoen Temple, keeps its own hours of 08:00–11:30 and 14:00–17:30, with final entry at 16:30. Free access to the resort does not mean that Guoen Temple and every internal experience share one ticket or one schedule.
Half a day to two days
Guoen Temple, Longtan Lake and Zen Domain Town can be covered in about 3–4 hours. A first visit with a slower pace works better as a full day, while hot springs, a hotel stay and the Zangfokeng hike are easier to manage over two days and one night.

Buddhist heritage and temple architecture
Guoen Temple is the part of the resort that needs the most careful timing. The Sixth Patriarch Hall, Bao'en Pagoda, millennium-old sacred lychee tree and Zhuoxi Spring are the main sights, while its opening hours, photography rules and temple etiquette are separate from the other resort areas.
Zen Domain Town is a Tang-style cultural street. It is easier to browse its lanes and gardens in daylight, while the lit streets are more suitable for an evening walk; holiday performances depend on the day’s programme. Longtan Lake Wetland Park is more relaxed, with lakeside paths and open grass where families can walk or rest.
Nature and resort stays
Zangfokeng has streams, bamboo and natural rock formations, and is suitable for a hike or stream walk when the weather is stable. The herbal hot springs, hotels and performances are paid resort experiences, so a budget visit can stay within the free areas.
The resort suits Buddhist-heritage visits, families, traditional-costume photography and weekend hot-spring breaks. If your priority is a quiet temple visit, you do not need to fit every resort activity into the same day.
Build your day
3–4 hours: free-area short route
Guoen Temple → Longtan Lake Wetland Park → Zen Domain Town. Check the temple’s entry and closure times first, then place the lakeside walk in the middle of the route and decide how long to stay in Zen Domain Town according to the evening lighting and performance schedule.
This route works well when time is limited and makes it easier to avoid the midday temple closure. If you cannot enter Guoen Temple before 11:30, visit the lake or town first and decide after 14:00 whether there is still enough time for the temple.
One day: temple, hike and evening streets
Start at Huineng Square, then visit Guoen Temple in depth. Have lunch at Longtan Temple or a temple dining hall, hike at Zangfokeng in the afternoon, and return to Zen Domain Town for the evening view. The temple and the Zangfokeng trail require different pacing, so leave time to change shoes, drink water and rest between them.
If you also want a performance or hot spring, confirm the programme before fixing the route. Performances, hot springs and hotels are separate paid experiences, and you should not assume that a last-minute place will be available.
Two days and one night: split the resort activities
On day one, visit Guoen Temple and Zen Domain Town, then use Nanyao Hot Spring and stay at a nearby hotel. On day two, visit Huineng’s former residence, walk at Zangfokeng and take a morning walk around Longtan Lake before leaving.
Hot springs, accommodation and performances are purchased or booked as separate items. Staying in the resort does not change Guoen Temple’s opening hours or make every attraction share one entry rule.
Get there
Driving is most convenient
Navigate to “Sixth Patriarch’s Hometown Tourist Resort” or “Guoen Temple”. Driving takes about two hours from Guangzhou and about 1.5 hours from Foshan. Several car parks serve the resort; standard parking is listed at around CNY 20 per visit.
Holiday car parks may fill early. Free spaces are available around Tajiacun near the primary school, about 500–600 metres from the resort, so you can park there and walk in if the main lots are full. Choose your main entrance before moving the car between areas.
High-speed rail and buses
You can take a train to Xinxing South Station or Yunfu East Station and then continue by taxi; the taxi journey is listed at about 15–20 minutes. Bus 1 from Xinxing town can reach the resort directly, but a taxi is more practical if you also want Zangfokeng or a hot-spring hotel.
The internal distances are manageable, but walking, parking and waiting still take time. Plan the return vehicle together with Guoen Temple’s closure and the end of any evening performance.
Know before you go
Guoen Temple keeps its own rules
High-priced incense may be sold near Guoen Temple. The temple provides three free incense sticks and does not allow outside incense and paper offerings inside. Wear suitable clothing when entering, and remember that photography is prohibited in the Sixth Patriarch Hall.
Guoen Temple closes from 11:30–14:00 and stops entry at 16:30. The resort’s all-day access does not extend these hours.
Trails, supplies and spending
The temple and Zangfokeng both involve outdoor walking, so wear shoes with good grip and carry water. Hot springs, performances and accommodation are charged separately; free access to the resort does not include every internal experience.
Longtan Lake, Zen Domain Town and Wenchang Bridge can fit into one trip, but a long hike, hot spring and evening walk should not all be pushed into the final hours of one day. Xinxing’s mud-baked chicken, eel soup, stone-ground rice noodles and wrapped rice dumplings are easier to find back in town than to rely on inside the resort.
