How to Visit
1

Check which route ticket you bought first

Tianmen Cave is not a standalone city-edge viewpoint. It sits inside the Tianmen Mountain route system. Route A usually reaches Tianmen Cave after the summit, while Route B reaches it earlier before going up to the summit.

Tip:Your ticket route decides the order, so check it before arriving.
2

Choose stairs or escalator based on stamina

The classic experience is climbing the 999 steps, but they are steep, busy, and tiring. If you have strong legs, the stairs are memorable.

Tip:If you are with older visitors, children, anyone with knee issues, or you are already tired, use the mountain escalator and save energy for the summit walkways and return.
3

Do not take one photo at the square and leave

Looking up from Tianmen Cave Square gives the clearest full view, but the perspective changes as you approach the cave. In good weather, wait a little for light and crowd gaps.

Tip:After rain or in mist, you may see fog moving through the cave, but visibility can also change quickly.
4

Build photo and queue time into the route

Tianmen Cave is one of the busiest points in the scenic area. The stairs, escalator, and main photo spots all take time.

Tip:Do not assume it will only take 10-15 minutes, especially in peak season.
5

Do not wait all day for one angle in bad weather

If thick fog covers Tianmen Cave, you can wait briefly at the square, but do not spend the whole day on one viewpoint.

Tip:Tianmen Mountain also has the cableway, Tongtian Avenue, and summit walkways, so shift priorities when the weather is unstable.
Highlights
  • Tianmen Cave is the signature landmark of Tianmen Mountain and the easiest image to recognize.
  • The 999 steps make it both a viewpoint and a real physical experience.
  • The view changes from the square, the middle of the stairs, and the area near the cave opening.
  • Mist after rain can make the scene dramatic, but it also brings visibility risk.
  • Tianmen Cave connects directly with Tongtian Avenue, the express cableway, and mountain escalators, making it a key route node.
Insider Tips

If you only want an easier visit, do not force yourself up all 999 steps. The escalator is the better choice for limited stamina.

Do not walk and turn around for photos on the stairs. It blocks others and can be unsafe when crowded.

Tianmen Cave Square can feel windier and cooler than the city, so dress more carefully in spring, autumn, and winter.

After taking the full front-view photo, move to the side or the steps to avoid the densest crowd.

If the weather is very poor, make Tianmen Cave your main goal and avoid forcing both full summit loops into the same day.
