How to Visit
1

Go up by Bailong Elevator for the most direct route

For a first visit to Yuanjiajie, the most common route is to enter through Wulingyuan Sign Gate, take the scenic-area shuttle bus to the lower Bailong Elevator station, then ride the elevator up the mountain.

Tip:From the upper station, you can connect directly to the Yuanjiajie boardwalk, saving a lot of climbing and making it easier to continue to Tianzi Mountain or Yangjiajie.
2

Follow the boardwalk through the main viewpoints

Yuanjiajie's key sights are relatively concentrated, so follow the route through Mihun Terrace, Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, and First Bridge under Heaven.

Tip:This area is not mainly about a hiking challenge. It is better to move slowly between viewpoints and watch how the peak forest changes from different angles.
3

Pair Yuanjiajie with Tianzi Mountain on the same day

Yuanjiajie works well with Tianzi Mountain as one mountain-top route. If time is tight, ride Bailong Elevator up, visit Yuanjiajie first, then take the shuttle bus to Tianzi Mountain and descend by Tianzi Mountain Cableway.

Tip:This is smoother than returning the same way and reduces repeated transfers.
4

Use the reverse route when crowds are heavy

Bailong Elevator often has long uphill queues in the morning. If you want to avoid the tour-group flow, consider going up by Tianzi Mountain Cableway first, visiting Tianzi Mountain, then continuing to Yuanjiajie and descending by Bailong Elevator.

Tip:The reverse route is not always faster, but it gives you more flexibility on peak days.
5

Lower expectations in heavy fog

Yuanjiajie depends heavily on visibility. Mist after rain can be beautiful, but if thick fog covers the whole ridge, Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, First Bridge under Heaven, and Mihun Terrace all lose much of their value.

Tip:In heavy fog, do not spend all your waiting time at one viewpoint.
Highlights
  • Yuanjiajie is one of the core mountain-top areas of the forest park and a strong first place to understand Zhangjiajie's peak-forest landscape.
  • Avatar Hallelujah Mountain is the most recognizable stone pillar and the main reason many visitors come here.
  • Mihun Terrace gives wide views over the peak forest and valley layers.
  • First Bridge under Heaven is a natural stone bridge, offering a different experience from a normal viewpoint.
  • Yuanjiajie connects closely with Bailong Elevator, Tianzi Mountain, and Yangjiajie, making it useful as either the start or middle section of a mountain-top route.
Insider Tips

Yuanjiajie is part of the Wulingyuan core scenic area, but Bailong Elevator, cableways, and other transport add-ons usually cost extra.

If the Bailong Elevator queue is too long, do not let the whole day collapse around it. Use Tianzi Mountain Cableway or Yangjiajie Cableway to adjust the route.

The boardwalk is not extreme hiking, but crowds, steps, and packed viewing platforms still take energy.

Do not focus only on the Avatar label. Yuanjiajie is most worthwhile for the continuous peak forest and the natural stone bridge.

Weather changes quickly on the mountain, so bring a raincoat and a light layer rather than relying on buying them inside the scenic area.
