Plan at a glance
Location and entrance
The Sufen Mountain coastal road is on Dongshan Island, a mountain road along the coast. The commonly used entrances are the South Gate of Sufen Mountain Scenic Area and the South Parking Lot. The coastal road itself is free and needs no reservation; the shuttle requires an on-site ticket. It is a scenic road, not a normal through road, and private cars face daytime restrictions.
Access rules
During the day, private cars are usually prohibited from entering the coastal road from 8:00-20:00; only electric scooters and the shuttle are allowed. Self-drivers park at the South Parking Lot and transfer. The shuttle usually runs from 8:00-18:00, with the last departure following the day's on-site notice; do not assume the road remains open after a closure or an event ends.
How much time you need
A quick round trip takes about 1.5-2 hours; riding the highlights route takes about 3-4 hours; if you want to hike and then ride the coastal road, allow about half a day. Daily electric scooter rental is commonly CNY 50-80. Sufen Mountain has uphill sections, and ordinary scooters can run out of battery halfway; rent a long-range lithium-battery model when possible.

Mountain-sea road and viewpoints
The coastal road has mountain terrain on one side and the coast on the other, with viewpoints, wind turbines, and blue railing bridge sections along the way. In good weather the sea views are clear, but do not expect every section to have one. The exact positions and parking rules for the blue bridge, viewpoints, and similar features follow the on-site situation.
Yanya Village area
The Yanya Village area keeps stone houses and sits near the rocky coast, good for a slow walk and photography. It is not a fully developed area: the lanes are narrow and some sections have blind spots. Do not enter closed buildings or get close to the cliff edge. Which small paths are open follows the on-site signs.
Riding and the shuttle
Electric scooters are the main way to explore; you can stop anywhere along the road, but calculate the battery carefully. The shuttle costs about CNY 10 per person round trip, stops at each station, and may involve queues for mid-route boarding; it suits older adults and children who do not want to ride. Whether a cafe on the mountainside is open follows the day's on-site situation; do not treat it as a fixed stop.
Who it suits
The coastal road suits riders, photographers, and visitors who enjoy mountain-sea roads. Older adults and children can use the shuttle, but stop availability and queues depend on the day. If you want to complete both the hike and the ride, allow half a day and confirm the road conditions in advance.
Build your day
Quick route (about 1.5-2 hours)
Enter from the South Gate and ride an electric scooter or take the shuttle along the coastal road, stopping at viewpoints and the Yanya Village area, then return to the South Gate. When time is limited, do not try to cover the whole route; pick the sections that matter for light and energy.
Highlights riding route (about 3-4 hours)
Rent an electric scooter at the South Gate, confirm the battery and brakes before setting off, and ride in the counterclockwise one-way direction. Stop at viewpoints and the Yanya Village area along the way and return to the South Gate at the end. Some sections are narrow with many bends; slow down and do not stop in the middle of the road to take photos.
Deeper combined route (about half a day)
If you want to hike, do the hiking section first, about 30 minutes one way, then come down and ride the coastal road, and visit the Yanya Village area in the afternoon. Sunrise and the sea of clouds depend on the weather and cannot be treated as guaranteed. Estimate the descent time, the day's opening conditions, and your energy before setting out, and do not pack the plan too tightly.
Get there
Driving and the South Parking Lot
Drivers can navigate to "Sufen Mountain Scenic Area South Parking Lot." Parking costs about CNY 10 per visit. Private cars are restricted during the day, so park and transfer to an electric scooter or the shuttle. Do not trust roadside solicitors offering to drive you up the mountain, and do not park at private soliciting spots.
Electric scooters and the shuttle
Rent a long-range electric scooter on the island or take the shuttle at the South Gate. The shuttle costs about CNY 10 per person round trip and stops at each station, but mid-route boarding may involve queues, and the last departure follows the day's notice. Before setting out, check the brakes, lights, and battery.
Plan separately from other island stops
The Sufen Mountain coastal road is in a different direction from Nanmen Bay and Jinluan Bay; if you arrange them on the same day, calculate the driving time and energy for each separately and do not treat them as a short loop along the way. If you also want to visit Yugu Sandbar or Dongshan Windstone Scenic Area, confirm the tide and access rules the day before or on the morning of the visit.
Know before you go
One-way rule and riding safety
The coastal road is one-way counterclockwise, and riding against the direction is strictly forbidden. Some sections are narrow with many bends and blind spots; slow down and do not stop in the middle of the road to take photos. On descents and turns, especially watch for oncoming scooters and the shuttle.
Electric scooter battery
Before setting out, check the brakes, lights, and battery, and rent a long-range lithium-battery model. Uphill sections drain the battery quickly, so calculate the battery for the whole round trip and do not ride until the scooter runs out and you have to push it. Supply points are few along the road, so bring your own water and snacks.
Weather and sun protection
UV is strong by the sea and the wind is strong, so a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and sun sleeves are practical. Avoid the harsh midday sun; the light is softer in the afternoon, but sunset colours depend on the weather and cannot be treated as guaranteed. In strong wind, watch that your hat is not blown away.
Road closures and operational changes
Some sections may close temporarily for drills or events, usually without advance notice. Confirm the day's road conditions before leaving; if a section is closed, follow the on-site guidance to reroute or return, and do not force your way through. The shuttle's last departure and stop availability follow the day's situation; do not schedule your return after operations end.
