Plan at a glance
Location and how to get in
Yugu Sandbar is in Qixia Village, Chencheng Town, Dongshan County, Zhangzhou, a tidal sandbar where the inner sea and the outer sea meet. The only entrance is Qixia Village Pier. The sandbar itself is free, but you must take a boat round trip; boat fares and departure times follow the operator's quote on the day. Being open all day does not mean you can reach the sandbar at any time; it is suitable to visit only within a low-tide window.
How much time you need
The drive from Tongling Town to Qixia Village Pier takes about 30-40 minutes. A quick round trip takes about 2 hours; if you want more time on the sandbar and in the offshore aquaculture area, allow about 3 hours. How long the sandbar stays exposed changes with the tide and is commonly only a few hours, so check the day's tide table before leaving and schedule the boat crossing, the stop, and the return all within the low-tide window.
Whether it is worth a special trip
This suits visitors who are willing to arrange the day around a tide window and want to see a sea sandbar. If time is tight, you are travelling with older adults or young children, or you simply want an easy seaside visit, Jinluan Bay or Nanmen Bay is a more relaxed choice. Confirm the day's tide before leaving; if the window is not suitable, change the plan instead of making the trip on the chance that it works out.

The sandbar at low tide
At low tide the sandbar emerges from the sea as a narrow stretch reaching into the water and is commonly called Yugu Sandbar. How long it is and what shape it takes on the day depend on the tide level and the on-site conditions; do not treat images from the internet as a fixed guarantee. From ground level it looks close to an ordinary beach, so think clearly about what you expect to see before deciding whether to arrange the boat trip.
The boat ride and offshore aquaculture area
The round-trip boat ride from the pier passes the offshore aquaculture area, where abalone and oyster racks line the route. Whether activities such as fish feeding are arranged depends on the operator's plans that day. Before leaving, confirm the round-trip price, stop time, and return departure; do not assume that on-boat activities are included in the boat fare.
Who it suits
It suits visitors who are willing to adjust the itinerary for a specific tide window and who enjoy photographing a sea sandbar. The ground-level view is close to an ordinary beach, so there is no need to come only for an aerial photo. If you want an easy sea view or to let children play on sand, Jinluan Bay and Nanmen Bay are more suitable.
Build your day
Quick round-trip route (about 2 hours)
Start at Qixia Village Pier, confirm the round-trip boat fare, stop length, and return time, then take the boat to the sandbar. Once on the sandbar, walk and take photos only within the safe area, and return to the pier at the agreed time. Leave margin in the whole plan; do not wait until the tide rises to start thinking about the return.
Deeper route (about 3 hours)
Confirm the price and schedule for a shared boat or private charter at the pier, then board. After arriving at the sandbar, follow the operator's stop arrangement; the return ride passes the offshore aquaculture area again. Work backwards from the day's low-tide window for both departure and return, and confirm with the operator before leaving how long you can stay and when you must be back on the boat.
Plan separately from other island stops
You can visit Yugu Sandbar in the morning and arrange Nanyu Double-Sided Sea or Jinluan Bay in the afternoon, but check the tide and travel time for each stop separately; do not treat them as one compact loop. Yugu Sandbar and Sufen Mountain are in different directions, so calculate the driving time and energy before putting them on the same day.
Get there
Driving and parking
Drivers can navigate to "Qixia Village Pier." There is a parking area at the village entrance that charges about CNY 10 per car. Do not park at roadside spots where people solicit drivers. The pier is the only boarding point for the sandbar, so confirm the day's boat schedule and tide conditions after arriving.
High-speed rail and taxis
After high-speed rail to Yunxiao Station, a taxi to Qixia Village Pier takes about 40 minutes and costs about CNY 80, subject to the meter. Alternatively, go to Dongshan Island first, then rent an electric scooter or charter a car from Tongling Town; the drive from Tongling Town to the pier takes about 30-40 minutes.
Getting around the island
An electric scooter from Tongling Town or a chartered car can both reach the pier; before leaving, confirm the scooter battery and the round-trip distance. The pier-to-sandbar section can only be crossed by boat; do not treat "arriving at the pier" as "arriving at the sandbar."
Know before you go
Tides are the key
Check the day's tide table before leaving, and schedule reaching the pier, the boat crossing, the stop, and the return all within the low-tide window. High tide submerges the sandbar and the water rises quickly; do not stay at the edge of the window. If you hear a warning or see the water level change, return immediately. If the tide is not suitable that day, change the plan.
Boat fare and itinerary confirmation
Local boat operators are not one unified service. Before leaving, confirm the round-trip price, stop time, and return departure; do not go out when the weather or sea conditions are poor. A shared boat commonly costs about CNY 50-80 per person round trip, while a private charter costs more; the exact price follows the operator's quote on the day. Do not trust verbal promises from roadside solicitors.
Gear and safety
The sandbar has no shade, so bring enough sunscreen, a hat, and drinking water. Wear non-slip shoes and do not walk barefoot on unknown ground; the sandbar and rocks may have shells or slippery patches. The tide rises quickly, so it is better to return early than late.
Weather and sea conditions
Strong wind, rain, and big waves can affect boat departures and can change how much of the sandbar is exposed. Leave room in the plan to adjust, and do not insist on going out when the operator says it is not safe. Whether the sea activity runs follows the on-site judgement that day.
