Gouqi Island

枸杞岛

Plan Gouqi with Shanhai Qiguan, Dawang Beach, Ganxie views, limited buses and a separate Shengshan connection.

Plan at a glance

An outer island connected to Shengshan

Gouqi and Shengshan are connected by the Sanjiaojiang Bridge and are often visited on the same trip, but each island still has its own villages, roads and attractions. This page focuses on Gouqi's Shanhai Qiguan viewpoint, Dawang Beach, Ganxie Viewing Platform and offshore aquaculture scenery. Dongya Cliff and Houtouwan Village are on Shengshan, not inside Gouqi.

From Shanghai Shenjiawan or Zhoushan's Zhujiajian area, the boat to Gouqi's Ganxie Pier can make the whole journey long. Allow 2 days and 1 night for Gouqi. A same-day visit is affected by boats, local driving and weather and is not suited to too many stops.

Tickets and local transport

Shanhai Qiguan and Ganxie Viewing Platform have open viewing areas, while Dawang Beach and other paid stops follow the ticket arrangements at the entrance that day. The available price notes are not precise enough to fix a number here, so confirm the ticket type and opening time on site.

Buses on the island are infrequent, with some sections more than an hour apart. Taxis are the main option for longer distances and usually require the price to be confirmed before boarding. Visitors are not advised to rent electric bikes; the island has steep slopes and many bends, and informal rentals are not a dependable transport plan.

Choose your visit

Shanhai Qiguan and the island view

Shanhai Qiguan is on higher ground and looks over the island, the offshore aquaculture areas and the Sanjiaojiang Bridge. It is a useful first viewpoint when the weather is clear and helps you understand the island's shape.

The slopes affect the time needed to reach it. Older adults and children should decide whether to climb according to their energy. Viewpoints can be windy, so stay inside the open area when taking photographs.

Dawang Beach and a slower coast stop

Dawang Beach is one of Gouqi's larger beaches and suits sand play, a short swim or a seaside break. The season, swimming area, rescue coverage and water activities follow the instructions on site.

Accommodation and food are more concentrated near Dawang Village, so this is a practical area for a base. Water colour and wave conditions depend on the weather; swimming and a particular sea colour are not guaranteed.

Ganxie Viewing Platform and the aquaculture area

Ganxie Viewing Platform looks over fishing boats, aquaculture floats and working areas on the sea. The softer light in the evening is useful for observation and photography. The aquaculture area is still a working water area, so do not approach or interfere with boats.

Gouqi suits photography, coastal walking and slower travel. Visitors who need frequent buses, a wide choice of food or city-level convenience should plan for the limitations of an outer island.

Build your day

A 2-day, 1-night Gouqi plan

After arriving at Ganxie Pier, take a bus or taxi to Dawang Village and check in. In the afternoon, visit Shanhai Qiguan according to the driving time, then go to Ganxie Viewing Platform in the evening. On the second day, spend time at Dawang Beach before returning to the pier for the departure boat.

If you arrive late, remove either Shanhai Qiguan or the viewing platform and complete check-in and the return-boat confirmation first. Arrival, food, climbing and sunset photography need separate time slots.

Connecting with Shengshan

With enough time, cross the Sanjiaojiang Bridge to Shengshan for Dongya Cliff or Houtouwan Village. This is an inter-island transfer even though the bridge connects the two islands. Calculate the bus, taxi and walking time separately, and leave room to return to Gouqi or catch the departure boat.

If anyone in the group is not comfortable with slopes or long vehicle rides, completing Shanhai Qiguan, Dawang Beach and Ganxie Viewing Platform on Gouqi will be easier to manage.

Fix the return first

Fix the return boat before filling the second day's beach and viewpoint schedule. Outer-island weather can stop or delay boats, so do not place the final stop on high ground or across the bridge away from the pier.

Get there

From Shanghai or Zhoushan's main island

From Shanghai, travellers usually take a coach from Nanpu Bridge Passenger Station to Shenjiawan, then change to a passenger boat for Gouqi's Ganxie Pier. Boats also run from the Zhujiajian Wugongshi area in Zhoushan. Calculate the coach, waiting time and sea journey together, and arrange the boat through a passenger channel such as “Shengsi Passenger Transport.”

There is no metro on Gouqi. Boats, ports and weather affect the arrival time, so confirm how you will travel from the pier to your accommodation when carrying large luggage.

Local transport

Buses connect Dawang Village and areas toward Shengshan, but intervals can be long. Taxis often use a fixed price rather than a meter. For a distant viewpoint or an early departure, arrange a vehicle in advance rather than looking for one just before sunrise.

Electric-bike use is not advised because of the island's steep slopes and bends. Wear walking shoes for viewpoints and beaches; a short map distance can still include a demanding slope.

Know before you go

Transport and weather

Strong wind and fog can stop boats. Water colour, distant visibility and sunset conditions also change with the weather. Confirm the boat before travelling and keep an ordinary sightseeing version of the day that does not depend on special conditions.

The roads are hilly and the summer sun is strong. Carry water, sun protection and a light jacket, and allow extra time for the bridge, vehicle waiting and return boat when crossing to Shengshan.

Supplies, food and spending

Food and daily supplies on Gouqi are limited. Confirm the price, portion and preparation method before ordering seafood. Carry water and simple food for a long stay at Shanhai Qiguan or the beach.

Tickets, transport and water activities are separate costs. Dawang Beach, Shanhai Qiguan and the Shengshan connection do not form one package or one shuttle system.

Coastal safety

Aquaculture areas, rocks and the edge of the beach may be wet or part of working waters. Keep away from aquaculture equipment, do not cross barriers and do not enter the water when waves are rough. Children in the water must stay within the designated safe area and an adult's supervision.
